As Vritten Fur UPI
HOLLYWOOD tU1'1)—Audience
participation shows are unique in
the world of entertainment
They are the wily form of com-
mercial entertainment in which
the program is "cast" spontan-
eously before each performance
Image a concert where the
maestro query recruited his play-
ers from the audience
Or a Broadway niusical where
the director came out to minutes
before curtain time and asked for
volunteers for the chorus and
four ladies to do the dancing in
the- second act
It would be sheer mayhem
Have Script
Yet for 20 years 'Truth or
Consequences" has been "cast"
just tins way We have the
script of course but our "ac-
tors" are people selected from
the audiences just before air
tune and the only way we have
of trying to fit the right contest-
ant to tile proper stunt is to chat
quickly and briefly with those in
our audience during the 20 nlin-
ute pre-show -wannup" and hope
to heaven we can find the right
ones!
It Call had to hilarious results
—or it can be deadly! So an
enicee 111WA develop keen insight
judgment perception—zind strong
nerves
The proper contestant can
"make" or "break" a stunt no
matter how good that stunt is It

may read funny on paper but un-
less the right candidate is sitting
in our audience it can be the big-
gest flop of the day
Women are Relaxed
Speaking generally I think
women make the best contestants
They're usually more relaxed and
less inhibited and of course more
talkative- When you get a gmd
male contestant he can be fabu-
lously good but more often the
nrien can't seem to unbend as well
as their better halves
We now do fewer of the wild
stunts that used to be our show's
trademark The custard pie rou-
tines and dunking fully-clothed
contestants in tanks of water
have given way to more re-
strained — or at Least tidier--
forms of fun And more and
more we find that conversation
cun often be as hilarious us a pie
in the kisser
It all makes for an interesting—
if somewhat hectic — job When
youve got 10 minutes IA) air time
and you need six or eight con-
testants and you want the show
to be the funniest one yet and
you can't find a soul in the house
who looks like he could get a
Sn tile in a room full of laughing-gas--
brother you're in trouble!

THE
LIGHT SIDE
By DICK WEST
United tress International
WASHINGTON UPI no-
body is using this corner to dis-
cuss the Congolese or the Kenne-
dys and Nixons I inight as well
say a few words about l'exas
I have just spent a pair of fort-
nights back-to-back sojourning in
the cow ciaintry What I was do-
ing was taking a vacation but
I lease don't tell the Internal Rev-
enue Service
For income tax purposes I was
sampling grass roots opinion
I intend to deduct my travel
costs as a business expense be-
cause I spent most of my vaca-
tion time making a political sur-
vey This was not the vay I
planned it but it's the way tinligs
worked out
At first glance Texas might
seem like a difficult place in
vaiich to sample grass roots opin-
ion There isn't any grass to
speak of and what grass there is
likely has a snake in it
Opinion is Pluntitul
Hut if there is a shortage of
grass roots there is certainly no
shortage of opinion A visitor will
find that opinion sampling in 'rex-
as is not only easy but unavoid-
able upon learning that I lived in
Washington the Texans I met
‘vould invariably ask what I
thought about the political situa-
tion The first couple of times this
happened I made an honest ef-
fot to give them a fair frank
and informed appraisal
"It looks had" I you'd say
It soon became apparent how-
ever that my interrogators were
not really interested in hearing
my opinion This was just a gam-
bit they used to introduce the
subject so they could tell me their
opinion
