By KINGSBURY SMITH
United Press International
LONDON (UPI)—Americal at-
titude towards a summit meeting
in the Middle Eastwas being pre-
sented to the British people today
in a manner that appears bound
to intensify the anti-American sen-
timent still running strong in this
country e
Most of England's leading news-
papers and especially' the popu-
lar press were giving the people
the impression the United States
government remains 'opposed to a
summit meeting' with Russia- on
the Middle East and will not work
earnestly for the successful out-
come of such a conference if it
Is held
Some sections or the popular
press such fis Lord Eteaverbrook's
Express 'and - the tabloid Sunday
Pictorial led British readers over
the weekend to believe President
Eisenhower is neither well enough
nor clever enough to risk match'
ing wits with that rough and
tough little bos of the Kremlin
Nikita Ehrushehey ' 1
A cartoon in the Express even
implied the President was afraid'
to meet the Soviet premier It por-
trayed hint as running away from
a summit Meeting and begging
Secretary of State John ' Foster
Dulles to find anether excuse for
not holding it lest he be "taken"
by Ehrushceev the Wit the Brit-
ish think The late President
Franklin D Roosevelt was "tak-
en" by Stalin at their 'war-time 1
conferences
Says Preparations Negative
Some newspapers sought to give
their readers the Impression the
United States will 'torpedo" the
summit meeting if It is held The
Washington correspondent of the
London "Observer": Patrick
O'Donovan said the American gov-
ernment was preparing ' for the
conference "in an increasing neg-
ative manner?
He indicated that If such a
meeting is held it:will be used
by the United States primarily as
a 'sounding board to attack rather
than as en opportunity to negoti-
ate a settlement of Middle East-
ern problems In fact he told his
readers it is not planned that the
President will "negotiate in detail
with the Russians"'
British correspondents in other
foreign capitals also give a criti-
cal and at times sarcastic picture
of American diplomacy at work
The Observer's Amman corre-
spondent reporting on the diplo-
matic trouble-shooting activites of
Undersecretary of State Robert
Murphy sad the latter's "diplo-
mate suecesses in Lebanon must
be causing sinking feelings ' in
some Jordanian stomachs"
This was a reference to Mur-
phy's efforts to bring about a rec
oneiliatien among opposing politi-
cal factions in Lebanon that would
facilitate early withdrawal of the
American military forces
Officials Concerned
The British including high gov-
ernment officials with whom I
have spoken are seriously con-
cerned over what they fear may
be a premature withdrawal of
American forces from Lebanon
If pro-Western King Hussein of
Jordan is to be saved the British
believe they will have to keep
their troops in that little kingdom
for months The British know they
will be subject to strong pressure
to leave Jordan once the Ameri-
cans have pulled out of Lebanon
As the Observer correspondent
said the British troops in Jordan
would under such circumstances
be left "looking as sheepishly out
of place as the girl at the party
whose beau has gone home with-
out her"
Some good British friends of the
United States think something
drastic should be done to over-
come the anti-American feeling in
Britain If President Eisenhower
attends a sutrunit meeting in Ge-
neva British officials feel it would
be a good idea for him to visit
Britain and try to win back the
confidence and warm friendship of
the British people that he enjoyed
as supreme commander of the al-
lied forces during the war

Come To An End Convapy Reveals
NEW YORK N Y — The re-
markable progress of this century
in lengthening the average lifetime
of the American people has leveled
off in recent years according to
statisticians of the Metropolitan
Life Insurance Company
The expectation of life at birth
In the United States reached a
peak of 696 years in 1954 dipped
slightly to 695 in 1955 and again
equaled 696 in 1956 Mortality data
now available indicate that the
1957 figure was somewhat lower
than in the years Immediately pre-
ceding reflecting the effect of the
influenza epidemic in the last
quarter of the year
A comparison of 1900 and 1956
mortality figures dramatizes the
progress made in the century in
increasing life expectancy the
statisticians report The 1956 aver-
age exceeded by more than 20
years the figure at the turn of the
century
According to 1900 mortality con-
ditions 25 percent of the newborn
would fail to reach their 25th birth-
day now Only 5 percent are not
likely to ettain that age Similarly
half the children born at the turn
of the century could expect
survive to age 58: currently half
the newborn can expect to reach
age 13 -

NEW YORK (UPI) — Threats
of pennant runaways in both
major leagues today inspired the
suggestion the majors adopt split

late-summer play

rival in the American circuit and
years For girls at age 5 705 years
of life remain about 60 years for
those at age 16 and 50 years for
those at age 26
For white males the average
length of life in 1956 was 673
years or 64 years less than that
for females The difference les-
sens from 6 years at age 9 to 5
years at age 41 and to 4 years at
age 56 The differences between 1
the sexes were consktrably smaller
around 1900- namely less than
three years at birth and only aboutl
one year at age 56
Among nonwhite persons the ex-
pectation of life at birth in 1958
was 611 years for males and 6591
years for females The average
length of life for the nonwhites
still lags considerably behind that
for the whites The difference
amounts to as much as 78 years
among females and 62 years 1
among males '
"The improvement in mortality
and longevity has been greatest'
for children and young adults" the
statisticians conclude "Thus since
1900-02 the expectation of life has'

COLOGNE Germany (UPI) —
Council fires burned furiously to-
day in the lodges of the "White
Indians of the Rhine" whose hap-
py hunting grounds are threaten-
ed by a renegade turned cowboy
Interest in the American Indian
runs high in this Rhineland city—
and his German admirers know
what happened to the original red-
skins when the cowboy appeared
on the scene
Admirers of Sitting Bull are
grouped in at least four organiza-
tions with names like the "Verein
Der Prairie Freunds" and "The
Dakota Indian Club" Many of the
more ardent fans have guaranteed
genuine Indian war togs but none
of them has any time for the
hated cowboy

Series" -
Suggests Split Schedule
To certify more life for future
major league campaigns he suggested-
the 154-game season for
each club be split into a 77-game
first half and a 77-game second
half And in each league the
winner' of the first half-season
would play the winner of the
second half for the right to re-
present its circuit in the World
Series -
"This year the season's first
half for the Yankees would have
ended on July 11"' he continued
"They would have won the first
half with an 11-game lead But
then they would have been forced
to start the second half nose-tonose
with all the other clubs and
given any club a chance to beat
them if any club could get hot
"That fresh start would have
rekindled Interest' in the race and
provided interest during August
and September"
It was Corcoran's willingness to
"modernize" during his 15-year
tenure as tournament manager of
the Professional Golfers' Assn
that helped make a "golden trail"
of the spring tourneys
