WALTERS 18 YESTERDAY
August 6 1919
Just 18 yem ago today on
August 6th 1901 the young lady
first the light She is now
an 18 year old maiden in the full
bloom of her youth She stands
with her rosy cheeks and fluffy
hair showing plainly that she is
in her full make up of the latest
style and most modern attire
The long sought for and lately
attained business boom is evi-
dence unmistakable that our citi-
zenship is one that deserves great
credit for their untiring energy
and faithful public sturdyness in
building so beautiful a little city
at her age considering all thihgs
We feel now since we have the
big oil fields at our door- and a
bumper crop this year in addi-
tional prosperity there will be no
trouble in Waiters making a
beautiful City of the first class in
the very near future
Judge Geo D Latham and
Judge S W Childers and a small
company of Purcell and Lexing-
ton citizens having received a
telegram from Washington thru
the local land office on Aug 5th
that the land applied for town
purposes had been segregated
came on Aug 6th 1901 and be-
gan the geographical survey and
settlement yrhich rapidly grew to
a fair sized village we will leave
it to our citizens to judge her
present and future prosperity

Commercial Club Notes
Walters Okla Aug 2— (Spe-
cial)— The champion orator of
the American Expeditionary
Force was Jed Johnson of Wal-
ters graduate of the University
of Oklahoma and a member of
the 36th Division overseas To
Johnson was Swarded the deci-
sion in an oratorical contest held
at Royat France June 23 and
participated in by men represent-
ing five leading American schools
of oratory '
The fact that this Oklahoma
soldier who went across to fight
and not to orate won a medal is
more pronounced because of his
defeating an Iowa orator who
once came near being elected to
congressybecause of his ability on
the stump over an honor frater-
nity man of the Chicago Univer-
sity and over a lecturer in the
service of the Redpath-Horner
Lyceum bureau There were five
judges and the decision was
unanimous for Johnson
Johnson will be remembered
by many former students of the
university and by many other
Oklahomans because of his hav-
ing won two oratorical contests
at the university and state
honors in the state prohibition
contest shortly before he became
a soldier in the spring of 1918
Overseas he was transferred to
the law department of the school
detachment at Clermont univer-
sity and it was Captain JUguida
of that university that organized
the contest and offered the medal
More than 2000 tickets at $1-
00 each were sold for the contest

crude oil by engineers and chem-

buyers show according to their
report that the oil has the least
waste of all oils of the United
States The tests show the crude
to have a 35 per cent gasoline

these figures shows the high
quality of the crude for lubri-
