OWENS-
DECKER
GRUDGE MATCH
There was more than usual in
terest over the wrestling match
between Ling Decker of Laho-
ma anp Steve Owens the Enid
piofessional football player and
wrestler They met at Conven-
tion Hall Thursday night in a
three fall ‘‘catch as catch can”
bout under the auspices of the
Elks lodge
Decker ntered the ring a-
gainst Owens several weeks ago
the favorite to win But to the
surprise of most fans Owens
"icked Decker up and slammed
him to the mat so hard that be
was unconscious for five mir
ales
The Ldmina matsinan claimed
that he lost because of over
confidence causing him to be-
come careless in leaving opening!
for Owens He demanded a fin
Uh three fall match to prove
his superiority
Bitter feeling sprung up be-
tween the two athletes and to
a certain extent followers of
both became agitated Decker
has been in secret training for
several weeks and expected to
make quick work of Owens
Owens has not been asleep
while Decker took wrestling les-
sons and has done several miles
of load work daily besides box-
ing and wrestling for an hour a
day He was in excellent physi
cal condition and confident of
winning again
There were two other finish
three fall matches The semi fi-
nal is between Rheinold Rosell
Lahoma and Charlie Ti Tung

of Decker’s
Ova Doane will wrestle Ken-
neth Schardein both of Lahoma

RURAL SCHOOL OPENINGS
WILL BE MADE SAFE?
“Fire trap” school buildings
will be removed from Garfield
county if school board mem-
bers act upon the instructions
which they have received from
County Superintendent J C
Hoflsommer He is being as-
sisted in the local campaign
to have all the exit doors
swing outward by Fire Mar-
shall John Conna ly and M A
Nash state superintendent of
schools
It is believed that a earn-1
paign for safe exits will be
favorably received since the
Babbs Switch tragedy which
snuffed out the lives of 35
children anil adults attending
Christmas exercises in the
school building last December
The 112 school buildings in
Gailiud county have been vis-
ited by Superintendent lloff-
vommer and his assistants
who report that the buildings
practically without exception
ire endangering the lives of
young students by neglecting
he simplest principles of fire
Prevention and safety codes
He claims that the problem
providing recognized features
of ‘Vafety ’first” architecture
is ignored by many school
board members who contend
that the average school build-
ug m the county wil not ho d
nough people to jam the exits
von in case of panic
The Hobart school was
maL but in spite of its size
many in the building failed to
scape because the exits were
not properly built
It has been pointed out that
t is not an additonal expense
to construct buildings to ac-
cord with safety designs The
cost of changing the doors on
the school buildings in Gar-
fief d county is hardly to be
considered when human lives
are involved
Precautions Listed
Specific precautions indicat-
:d by State Superintendent
Nash include the following
“Have at least two doors
in each schoolroom”
“Have all doors in schools
to open OUTWARD”
“Have window screen at-
tached with hinges and fasten-
ed with hooks or other devises
easily unfastened from the in-
side” ‘‘Keep all flues in repair”
‘‘Avoid having rubbish or
other infammables about the
school building”
“Have Fire Drill”
“Have adequate fire escapes
and the use of same frequently
practiced in tne school build-
ings of more than one story”
Many of our states have
provided by law that all pub-
lic buildings construct exits
swinging outward and the en-
actment of such a law in Ok-
lahoma is in order since the
Hobart catastrophe has made
the need of such precaution-
ary measures plain

NEWS FROM ENID NEWS
According to (Special to the
News) taken from the Enid
Daily News the light system
at Lahoma was recently over-
hauled The interesting part of the
item however is that the sys-
tem was only installed here
eight months ago
The fact of the matter is La-
homa installed the first elec-
tric light system in 1922 fol-
lowed by connecting up
with the “high line” in August
1923 The present company
has been in control of the
“high line” a little over eight
months
Another item from the same
source regards the sale of the
fixtures of the old Farm-
ers State Bank and states that
the bank “is now an empty
building with an unused
vault”
The facts are that this build-
ing is now occupied by the
Holliday Cafe which is doing
a thriving business and proba-
bly is uing the vault to store
the surplus (?) cash taken in
SMALL RAIN
A fight rain fell here Thurs-
day night of last week With
every prospect indicating a
good rain the prevailing high
wind is thought to have pre-
vented realization of this
hope
North and south of town the
fall was much heavier and
erough fell to be of consid-
rable benefit
Prosnecir again look good
at the time this is being writ-
ten (Tuesday morning)
W A West has a public sale
hilled for Thursday March 26th
and will move to Enid soon after
the sale Mr West has been in
the train service on the Frisco
railroad for a number of years
and finds it rather hard to look
after a farm and his railroad job
too
A copy of the bill for this sale
