BACK YOUR PLANS WITH WAR BONDS War Bonds ate the
best and safest way to invest your money against your

FORTHEGARDEN I FOR THE CAR

Now Is the Time
To Pull Up Those
Perennial Weeds
Comparatively few gardners think
of weeding so 'early ift the spring
but the perennial weeds' UI1 are
conspicuous now and are easily
removed from both garden and
lawn
Each weed that you remove now
also removes that possibility of
uncounted descendents appearing
later on
One of the main objects of culti-
vation nowadays is recognized as
the destruction of weeds so this
garden task should be started
early and continued regularly
It's much easier to "keep the weeds
down" while they are tiny than it
is to get rid of them after they
develop root strength and weeds
develop root strength in an amaz-
ing fashion
Keep the ground constantly
stirred between the garden rows
Seeds that are slow in germinating
can lie protected by stretching a
heavy cord between the labels to

serve as a guide in running the
cultivator
In the rows themselves the weeds
must be pulled by hand
The farmer likes to cultivate on
a tainny day Thin the weeds that
are pulled or turned out of the
ground quickly die in the sun
Ile ready to take care of the other
garden pests insects and disease
with sprays and dusts Although
some of the chemicals we've lose'
' in the past aren't available for in-
secticides others have been de-
veloped to take their places se we
can be well prepared for our war
on insects
An effective way to control cut-
worms and grasshoppers is te
spread poisoned bran mash oa the
ground around the plant Of course
care must be taken that dogs and
eats are kept away from the gar-
den but one application of tne
mash will usually clear out the
pests
To make this mash use one quart
1 of bran one-half lemon or orange
run through the food Chopper two
tablespoons table syrup twe cups
water and one tablespoon white
arsenic Mix to riash
If you use a poisoning spray on
plants to get rid of insect pests
you must begin at the very first
sign of any trouble and keep on
spraying at frequent intervals
until ail traces are gotte One
spraying is not enough to kill
insects
The Mexican bean beetle is a
common pest that plays havoc in
our gardens When you see the
first chewed leaf spray the plants
with rotenone and repeat in a
few days
If you keep your garden free
from weeds and well eultivated you
will have less trouble with Insect
pests and diseases
