Pay Little 31ore But Get Gravel That

Roads and Perhaps Double the
Length of Time They Will
Stand Up
I:y paying ttl2 cents more per cubic
yard for gravel the lloard of County
Commissioners have purchased a sup-
'Titor product tind believe they NVi 11
1)1 thus enabled to build gravel roads
over the county Gull will last a great
(tal longer and perhaps twice
limps as the cheaper and inferior pro-
duct The commissioners take the
position that it is bettor to pay $1400
noire for gravel used in u $90000
project than to have that small
amount only to greatly shorten the
I ife of the gravel roads
It is simply a case that ad busi-
ness men citizens and farmers run
II p against all the time Accept a low
hid and an inferior article and then
have to replace the improvement in a
short NVI1110 thus doubling the ex-
pense of the project and finally cost-
ing double the amount paid in the
final windup
The Events makes this explanation
for the reason that representatives Of
the gravel company that failed to get
the contract at a low bid are squawk-
ing in loud acclaim saying that the
gravel accept NI NVill COSt $ 18000
more when their gravel is just as n
good As a matter of fact the differ- (-
once in bids i$ only $1400 and when t
the facts are taken into consideration e
the commissioners would be justified ()
in paying even a higher price than e
they did rather than to accept infer- h
and short-lived gravel
The project now proposed to gravel P
is a stretch running north
from Drummond north to the La- u
homa road a distance of six miles u
This stretch is known as project C
A mile east from where project C u
joins the Lahoma road which rutin V
east and west another stretch of six It
miles will begin and run north to Car- u
Fier This is known as project D
The county commissioners say that
the award to the Tro- Granite-Gravel s:
company of Purcell Okla for ap7
culde yard and that gravel offered by
the Salina company weighs 2500
pounds to the cubic 3ard This they
believe ITICanS that the Salina com-
panys product contains more clay
than the other and their opinion after
careful investigation leads them to
the belief that the cheaper gravel is
of inferior quality
The contract was awarded by the
entire lp)ard and with the approval
oi F W Denner county engineer The
i 'id of I he Troy Granite-Gravel com-
pany is $2166 per ton which amounts
to $219 per cubic yard The bid of
the Salina company was $191 per ton
or $24212 per cubic yard The com-
missioners declared that the fact that
the latter concern's material weighed
200 pounds more to the cubic yard
made the difference when figured on
the yardage weight basis only 6'12
cents although the difference when
figured on the tonnage rate is 226-

Red Leghorns with hoot owl

going to bring my chick-owls
to Enid NV hen you folks get

summer I am going to try to
cross my chick-owls with a
crow I think it can be done
In that cross I would have a

The coming of Paul Whiteman and
his will famous jazz orchestra to
Convention hall on November 9 under
the auspices of the D A IL is an
event to which many of the people
of Enid are looking forward It is
expected by those who are bringing
him here that his nrogram will be of
such a general nature that it will ap-
peal to 'hose of all ags The follow-
ing is quoted from an editorial which
appeared in the Chicago Daily Trib-
une on April 7:
"For all his genial informality and
unpretentiousness the music Mr
Whiteman offers is something which
means and is going to mean music to
us in America and to musical art in
the world
"It is as racy of our soil as a Rus-
sian folk song is of Russia It is
the rush of our racing streets It has
all the bright contrasts of our racial
conglomerate but they are now form-
ing in designs of real harmony and
meaning It has our moods and our
spirit our impudence and irreverence
our joy in speed and force But it
can sigh as well as laugh and in the
midst of its boisterous synicism and
surface brilliancies it opens glimpses
of quiet underdeeps and sudden
sweeps of feeling which show how far
its eventual achievements will go
"Already if st layman's opinion is
worth anything we should say that
American music genius has in rag-
time and jazz contributed something
of great vitality to the art of music
in its rhythms and new instrumental
colorings But beyond our elemental
pleasure in all that we as Americans
can be stirred by it as a very signi-
ficant and remarkable expression of
American temperament and national
genius a spontaneous combustion like
tll great national art from the life
of the people not a self-conscious ef-
fort to be American to be national
ro to be original or different"
