LET'S SUPPORT A SUPERHIGHWAY
The stoppage of the interurban service in this sec-
tion has brought this entire area face to face with a
vital problem to every property owner along 39th
Street from Pennsylvania Avenue west
This section should support any practical plan to
use the interurban right-of-way for the elaboration of
a superhighway and should oppose any scheme to fill
the right-of-way with objectionable buildings
Iilliuns of dollars have been invested in property
along Highway 66 but there are some Oklahoma peo-
ple who are cautiously advocating a plan to route much
of the highway north to 63rd then west joining the
highway west of the lake and leaving the present 66
a secondary route between Oklahoma City and the
junction point west of the lake If that plan is adopted
it will mean that much of the business section now in
use v i 11 be rendered almost worthless
Every tourist court every filling station and every
eating place may as well be junked if Ilighway 66 is re-
routed If the right-of-way is to be abandoned every club
every business man and every resident here should
join forces and exert every effort to convert the entire
route into a super-highway The right-of-way has every-
thing a super-highway requires a direct and almost
gradeless route embankments drainage and ap-
proaches built width required by future traffic needs
and above all a large group of investors who have their
all invested in property on the faith that 66 was a per
manently routed road
Many cities and in our own state Tulsa have
samples of ruined investors caused by highway re-routing
It is true that modern advancements and improve-
ments frequently have a large casualty list but in this
case it would be unnecessary no improvement in traf-
fic convenience would vesult and none could reap any
benefit except those who may have abutting property
along a new route Frankly the change is still in the
rumor stage but frequently rumors have facts for foun-
dations There is a plan on foot to make the old right-of-way
a super-highway and it is up to us to support it
o i
If no is shown a change could be arranged
and not announced until the whole thing has "jelled"

Let's imagine I've worked 20
years and saved $20000
What am I going to do with it?
I'm certainly not going to be
crazy enough to start any new
business with it
I'd have to hire six lawyers and
six tax experts and six account-
ants to keep me rtraight on gov-
ernment regulations reports and
taxes
I know that the government
would tithe most of my earnings
in taxes
I know that the 150 people I
might hire could gang up on me
and make wild demands for
wages etc I'm not sure I could
get materials on account of
strikes in other industries
So I'm going to put my imag-
inary $20000 in a sock and live
off of it a few crackers at a time
Can you blame me?
