DO rr NOW
A great many of the citizen
of Yale have taken cognizance
of the warning of the heath wl-
thoritles regarding the va-cii1Jtion
against small pox ani thcre
are a number of sore arms about
town But there are still a large
number of persons who have
failed to be vaccinated more
from neglect than from a feel-
ing of opposition to
It's no joke and the man who
Inughs at the idea of a scare of
this kind is not joking he's sim-
ply aiding in a crime against
the community and against hu-
manity There is danger of this dread
diFease arriving in this commun-
ity just the same a3 it arrived
in other communities of the state
Rut the way to get the best of
it 13 to be prepared and in shape
to stamp it out
The health department of the
state county and city have a
great deat of authority in mat—
ters of this kind and it should
not be necessary for the public
to be forced into a precautionary
measure but that is just wha-
will happen if more serious
thought is not given to the mat-
ter of vaccination
If you haven't already beer
vaccinated then the time to dc
It is right now and not after the
appearance of the disease

TOO MUCH OF IT
Sometime this morning it is
reported that a young man gave
another young fellow a Whippim
for an alleged insult to his sis-
ter by attempting to flirt with
her
What the result in police cone
-will be we do not know but we
are in hopes that if the story of
the brother is coroberated that
the police judge will dismiss the
young man with commendation
In spite of the warning sent
out some time ago by the Ku Klux
Klan against the habit of you'll'
men on the streets making -remarks
regarding young ladies
walking on the streets there has
been some of this dirty display
of low breeding and it is to be
hoped that if there be such an
organization as the Ku Klux
Klan that an example be made
of some of these foul mouthed
young men who clutter up the
sidewalks with their worthless
carcasses and profane the air
with their remarks
TURNING THE CORNER
Some time ago in the Chamber
of Commerce the matter of
changing the location of the sil-
ent Nvatchman at the corner of
Chicago and Main Street was
discussed and the suggestion that
the post be removed entlrely was
made
The main reason for the dis—
cussion of the location Of the
post was because of the difficul-
ties encountered in trying to go
north from the corner and the
objections on this part were
well taken but so far as the
other three directions are con--
cerned if one vi11 only stand
near this corner On almost any
day he will see that litttle regard
is given the post wheather the
cars are going east or Nvest
north or south Several accid-
ents have been narrowly avoid-
ed Doing away with the post en-
tirely to make this corner a cor-
ner for accidents

r00 MUCH LOVE OF DISPLAY
"Everybody wants to occupy
in orchestra seat in the show of
fe" complained Governor Mil-
er of New York a few days ago
N'ot everybody of course but 1
reat many it may be agreed
lovernor Miller thought the de-
'ire to be conspicuous to be a
cad of the crowd to make a
lisplay along with some other
hings was at the root of much
rregular conduct even crime
The desire for display to he
:710Wri or noticed is at bottom
laudable feeling It is vitally
-elated to the upward movemen'
4 the race and with progress
of all kinds Complacency con
entment a willingness to lei
onditions remain as they are if
made the absolute rule of con-
luct would soon leave the world
in a sad state of stvmation and
lecay John Ruskin discovered
n his experience with education-
1 institutions that most parents
lesired for their children the
tind of training that would en-
able them to command the res-
fleet and attention of men This
's not bad The trouble arises
vith the varied motives that dom-
inate attempts to get ahead and
ain attention and with the
means many individuals -employ
in their efforts to be out in front
It was evidently of those Nvhe
allow the wrong motives to pre-
vail and employ the wron g means
that Governor Miller spoke
it is not really understood
that society in order to protect
1self must constantly fiml some
form of punishment for this
lass But the welfare of all de--ends
on a close scrutiny of the
individual's conduct One man
makes money through long con-
inued industry and thrift and
ains the prominence that weal-
th confers another by get-richluick
methods Or illegal means
tries to attain the same thing
One man gets high office be-
cause of personal merit and ac-
mmplishment another with
loubtful ability and attainment
would get the office by employ
ing trickery or unfair use of
money One class of individuals
who advance desire places of
Prominence because of the
reased good they may do an-
Aber class simply for the sake of
be!ng known as prominent or us-
ing an advanced position for sel-
fish or illegal purposes The
members of one group benefit
society as a Nvhole those of the
other would benefit only them-
Ives and at the expense of
Some day it may be more gen-
erally realized that only by play-
ing fair with others as veil as
himself can a man hope for real
advancement and that display
may be more pen-
that only only by play-
others as veil as
man hope for real
and that display
