Mailbox Improvement Week
Aims At Better Service
The US Postal Service has desig-
nated May 15-19 as "Mailbox Im-
provement Week”
"Each year a week in May is set
aside to remind customers on rural
city motorized and contract delivery
routes to examine and improve
where necessary die appearance of
their mailboxes" says Vian Postmas-
ter James Gwinn
"The purpose is to call attention to
the need to provide mail receptacles
that arc conveniently located safe to
use neat in appearance and designed
to protect the mail from the weather"
Gwinn continues
There is no quesuon that neat at-
tracuvc mailboxes improve the ap-
pearance of country roads and subur-
ban streets The Postal Service
points out however that Mailbox
Improvement Week means more
than eye appeal
"Say dial an old dented box has
sharp cutting edges or dial the recep-
tacle is loo small too hard to reach or
made inaccessible by obstrucuons —
in such cases the mail may be
stamped undehvcrablc and the cus-
tomer would have to come to die post
office to pick it up We need the
cooperation of our customers to
maintain service at its highest level"
says Gwinn
Customers are requested to re-
move obstructions — including ve-
hicles trashcans and snow— that
make delivery difficult

One last safety cauuon from the
