My warden is
gone for a moment
so I'll grab a pen and w rite
a short column
Last week my doctor let
me stick my nose in the of-
fice but he said "Don't
think you're going back to
work yet — even part-
time’' As I visited Lions Club
last Tuesday I could see
there was real concern for
my health Also I could see
the same as I visited with
Ruth Buttery Charles
Kirk Ruth Locust Bill
Willis Bob Hill and others
at the school cafeteria this
Monday
Really I should not have
referred to my sweet wife
Martha as "warden" but
she handles me very well
during this little health
crisis
ONE FRIEND SAYS
the loss of community
leaders like Joe Simon and
J D Hamilton "makes
you stop and think "
And with one hour in the
morning and one in the
afternoon prescribed for
absolute rest it does give
me a lot of time to "stop
and think”
The conclusion I reach is
that many of you have
been very helpful You've
said prayers sent cards
and really humbled me by
your care and concern
R J asked about me
And probably people I
don't even know like G F
liave said prayers for me

MAN THOUGHT HE
HIT DEER OR OWL
A Bethel man faces a
felony count of leaving the
scene of a personal injury
accident after he allegedly
told McCurtain County
Sheriff William Fiedler he
had hit either a deer or owl
Last Sunday morning near
Harris
What he hit says police
was 52 year-old William
E Washington a man who
was walking alongside US
259 about a half-mile north
of the Harris Store
Lab tests showed that a
mirror which broke at the
time of impact could only
belong to a 1988 pickup
Police asked for the
public's help in locating
such a suspect’s vehicle
Fiedler said he later learn-
ed that Nelson Bowen of
Bethel had tried to replace
an aerial and mirror for
his 1988 truck

LETTERS A
TO THE j
EDITOR
Editor:
Where are our new band
uniforms?
That is the question
many people have asked
this year It seems
someone told that we were
going to have new uni-
forms this year
Well here is the answer
The Vian Band Boosters
do not have the money
The Booster Club pays
for the band jackets we
feed the band on the
longest ballgame trip and
if we go to a play off game
we will feed them again
For the last two years we
have paid entirely for the
banquet
New uniforms will cost
between $175 and $200
each and we will need 75 to
100 uniforms
We have tried bake
sales selling Blue and
Gold Sausage selling
tickets on a clock and
other things but ouf band
parents and band students
must not want new
uniforms because they
will not help us
A few of the parents will
help in the concession
stand but only a few
When I call to ask if they
will work 1 heard all kinds
of excuses
The students will not
even help us sale the
sausage Out of all the
band classes when we sent
the last sausage order we
had twenty-five students
that sold sausage and that
is all
At the present time we
are selling T-shirts and
tickets on a wall clock that
we will draw a ticket for at
halftime of the Haskell
game
If anyone has an idea
how we could raise more
money Please contac
me

Again we begin our
report with sad news Joe
Simon was laid to rest on
Friday of last week We
extend our sympathy and
words of comfort to
Pauline and her family in
their time of sorrow
The group that went on
the scenic tour last week
reported the fall foliage is
so beautiful it defies
description The first leg
of their journey was from
Vian to Tahlequah where
they stopped for lunch
Other places where
stops were made were an-
tique stores where all the
folks enjoyed browsing
among things that remind-
ed them of the good old
days
Those who treated
themselves to a day of
viewing the awesome
beauty of our Okla Hilljs
were van driver Sue Mi-
Coy Sid Hendrixson
James Haglan Louise
Harrison Euleta Holder
Margrie Smith Irene Sut-
ton Ethel Leep and Sybil
Moore
We did have two new
participants last week
Both Argie Page and
Henry Blevins decided to
come back and join the
crowd after being AWOL
for a long time Welcome!
Bill Tom Young's guest
last week was Peggy’s
mother Irene Hutton
We made a trip to Tulsa

FULLER
last week It wasn't a
pleasure trip We went to
see our daughter Frankie
Parke who is in a hospital
and sister-in-law Opal
Fuller who is seriously ill
Daughter Phyllis Avra
invited us to have lunch
with her She couldn’t get
away from work long
enough to go to a restau-
rant We ate in the hospital
cafeteria where she is
nurse supervisor
Seeing Phyllis in her
working environment
caused this old Mom to
know she is justified in be-
ing as proud of her baby
girl as she is of the older
kids
Does anyone have a
news itqms to share with
us? Please let me know if
you do It’s hard to write
something interesting
when items are as scarce
as they were last week
Other than Mom some
of the Sallisaw Nursing
home residents we visited
last week were: Thelma
Burrow Susie King
Bessie Spencer Maudie
Clark Ada Benge Martha
Tinny and Sally Farmer
Other visitors we en-
joyed seeing were Vinita
Farmer and Grace Ashill
