Britain Readies
Huge Festival
For This Summer
LONDON—API—Britain is racing
against time to get its festival ex-
position the first world fair since
New York's in 1940 ready for
Opening on May 3
A bridge which fell in the
Thames an anti - aircraft gun
Which toppled from a 200-foot
tower labor troubles consistently
drizzling weather and shortages of
materials have handicapped pre-
parations The chances are that while the
paint may still be wet th nation
will have a gOOti MOW ready by
the deadline to enliven local aus-
terity and attract tourists
The main exhibition will be on
the south bank of the Thames Just
west of Waterloo Bridge where 17
pavilions have been built includ-
ing a building with the largest
dome in the world 365 feet in
diameter
Emphasis on Science
Emphasis is on science Britain's
history her industries and arts
Europe's finest musicians have
been invited and American enter-
tainment stars will be here for the
festival
Farther up the river at Batter-
sea Park is the fun fair with rol-
ler coasters dance pavilions and
a midway About the only parallel
to Sally Band Chicago's stellar
attraction in the 1930s is a mer-
maid with legs in the center of a
fountain however
Some Britons feel the timing for
the fair couldn't be much worse
ip view of the international situa-
tion The sponsors point out how-
ever that the tension may last for
years and people can't put all
merriment in cold storage indef-
initely There is some griping that Paris
decided to stage a festival there
this year on the 2000th anniver-
sary of the city's founding The
cynical say Paree's origin is very
hazy as to date rind that the
French decided Americans coming
for Britain's festival might just as
well come on across the channel
Influenza Waning
What is worrying the sponsors
mote however ii a winter of bad
publicity about influenza ninecents-a-week
meant rations and
austerity It is only fair' to say
that influenza is waning and should
be gone by spring and that so far
as visitors are concerned they can
eat well in British hotels
The main exhibition sitewill ac-
conunodate 50000 visitors a day
and it is believed the gates will
have to be closed to an overflow
quite frequently
Anticipating a traffic jam busses
are being re-routed out of the con-
gested atea around the river
Hotel rooms will be a problem
The sponsors decided on a novel
step for visitors who have little
to spend and want only a bed with-
out fancy accommodations A deep
shelter used during the blitz has
been converted into an under-
ground hotel capable of accom-
modating 6000 persons

Selective Service Directive Lists Status
Of Registrants in ROTC Service Branch
Chairman of local board No 80
of Woods County stated the board
has received from General Hershey
director of selective service a
bulletin explaining the status of
registrants selected for enrollment
or continuance in the Reserve Of-
ficers' Training corps of the Army
Navy or Air Force and clarifying
the time limitations during which
registrants may be selected for
such training
The main points of the bulletin
were as follows:
1 Congress provided in the
Selective Service Act of 1948 for
the statutory deferment of those
students selected for enrollment or
continuance in the senior 4tivision
of the Reserve Officer' 111ining
corps of the Army Navy or Air
Force and those appointed as mid-
shipmen United States Naval re-
serve provided they agree in writ-
ing to accept a commission if tend-
ered and to serve not less than
two years on active duty after re-
ceipt of their commission
2 Those registrants selected for
Reserve Officers' Training corps
programs who sign the agree-
ment shall be deferred from in-
duction for training service un-
til after graduation or termination
of the course of instrirction and so
long as they continue in a regular
or reserve status after being com-
missioned The deferment of these
students is mandatory upon the lo-
cal board
3 Department of defense policy
governing the selection of regis-
trants for enrollment in the vari-
ous reserve officers training pro-
grams places no restrictions as to
the time of selection or as to the
selective service status of the in-
dividual to be selected The only
restriction is on the total number
to be selected This is prescribed
by the secretary of defenKe who
gave the services in Dec 1950 the
following overall quota in the Re-
serve Officers' Training corps col-
lege rwograms Army 11420: Air
Force 69800 and Navy 18700
The Inter-Service Agreement of
the Armed Forces which prohibits
the enlistment of registrants after
they have been ordered to report
for their selective service pre-induction
physical examination does
not apply in the selection of stu-
dents for the ROTC
Mr W D Julian revealed that
of 1250 registrants only 21 have
been certified by military depart-
ments of colleges as selected for
enrollment or continuance in the
senior division of the reserve Of-
ficers' Training corps program

Recreational
Parks May Get
State Lodges
OKLAHOMA CITY March 17
—Plans are being drawn to build
recreational lodges atiQnariz Moun-
tain State park and the new Se-
quoyah State park at soon its
federal building restrictions are
lifted -
Dick Chiles director of the parks
division of the planning and re-
sources board saki today the
$850000 lodge built with self-liquidating
bond money at Lake Mitr-
ray is "paying off a little better
than we expected and there Is no
reason we can't use the same plan
at our other parks"
Ile said tentative plans call for
construction of a $500000 to $750-
000" lodge at the Quartz Mountain
park near Altus but that it is too
early to tell how much could be
profitably invested at Sequoyali
The Sequoyah park between
Wagoner and Tahlequah' will be
opened this summer for the first
time
"Those two are the first on our
list When we see how they turn
out we will start looking at our
other parks" Chiles said
He said his division is working
on plans to build roads to the boat
dock area and "into the moun-
tains" at the Quartz park They
will have to be completed before
the lodge could be built he said
Under a law passed by the last
session of the legislature the state
may Issue bonds fin- the comtruc-
tion of park facilities that will
bring in enough income to retire
the debt
