Now please don't go away when
you read the first paragraph but
just stay tuned in for a while as
we think we have a little something
extra special to say the full Mg-
nifivanee of which will not dawn
on Alva sport fans for a few years
yet
So here we go again Come
"Senior Day" at Northwestern
State college when hundreds of
young people here prior to their
taking off on the second leg of
their Journey to the life of their
choice the athletic department of
Ye Olde Castle on the Hill is cook-
ing up a dish that might have a
great significance on the athletic
future of northwest Oklahoma
—
'They are bringing sisman foot-
ball out of the closet where
has been timidly hiding with only
sporadic attempts to meet the pub-
lic and introducing it with all it
pristene magnificience and trim-
mings They are pioneering the
idea of selling it to the public the
students and the visiting coaches
You are still not interested huh?
How about you fellows coaching
at schools with enrollments so
small that you cannot have a regu-
lar football team though you would
very much like to have the sport
on the curriculum of your school?
How about you Delbert Leman
Paul Koppitz and Maurice Irons
Vince McGuire Kenneth Quinlan
and hundreds of other coaches who
like the sport but cannot afford to
attempt it?
Now fellows you Just cannot shrug
this off as easily as you think
you can Just look over your en-
rollment Here and there you will
find big sturdy looking boys some
potential all-Americans who you
know as a coach and physical in-
structor are fitted much better for
football than any other sport but
will never make the grade because
they will enter college without any
prep school training and experi-
ence IS it fair to this boy or that
boy who might obtain an attractive
scholarship to deny him at least
a chalice to make the grade? Do
not you as a coach want to give
your boys every advantage possi-
ble in fairness to him his parents
and his posterity?
still sounds silly and somewhat
on the sermon order huh? Al-
right then you asked for It Six-
man football which was almost
ruled out of athltics for the lack of
participation clue to a lot of silly

traditional propaga'ndit which tent-
ed to indicate momeone was tryvn
to play rock pile with the grand
Old 11-man game is right now the
fastest growing sport in the na-
tion -
And why? It is because that King
Football is riding high and col-
leges Etre now cruttiih og every
boy regardless of where he en-
rolled to find out whether or not
he is qualified physically and men-
tally to make the grade and hence
they are going out an encouraging
It much the seine as the chain
baseball system that endeavors to
ferret out all available talent and
give that talent a chance to develop
But much of this work is being
done thnidly as though the spon-
sors were afraid the public would
find out they were encournwing
Now Northwestern has bravely nc
cepted the challenge The athletic
department thinks it is time the
budding flower should burst forth
like the aurora borealis in all fir b
splendor and cease wasting'
fragrance On the desert air :
-
So right now Junior Johnson and
Dick Highfill have a large group
of stalwarts out on the practice
field getting ready to present this
game with all its trimming here
senior day when from this coterie
of brawn finesse and muscle will
be selected two crack 'teams to
present the game in spirit techni-
que and even song as Henry Scott
the famed musician vAll try and
put you in a cadence with tramp-
ling feet going onward to a higher
end better land '
The game the afternoon of April
6 will be filmed in technicolor and
used to further introduce the game
to those who desire to adopt it and
will later be available for -coaches
in small towns who want to Intro-
duce it in their school or still it to
the patrons
- -
When you hear this game men-
tioned you evience only Mild in-
terest if you have not seen It
ed But talk to some one who ha:t
seen it and note their enthtira! In
and their strident tones as r they
begin telling you of how spectacu-
lar and interesting it is I
"We would like to sre the old
stadium jammed for this occasion
We have already sent out invita-
tions to over 125 schooln this
section of the country ' more
people are becoming interested
But above all we would like to see
the stands filled with Alva busi-
ness men and other Alva Citizens
We want to make it one of the
most gala events In the towns
history We think it will be a
great success It is gaining im-
petus by leaps and boundS Al-
ready small schools in the immed-
iate vicinity are setting up con-
crete plans for the game Who
knows but what the future Mr
Football might come from Amor-
ita Driftwood Dar OMR Freedom
Capron or Hardtner?
-
"Furthermore students of these
little schools are no doubt
military service And we feel' ow
as never before athletics should be
given the green light We feel that
these boys should have every op-
portunity for rugged development"
one college officials told us! as he
enthusiastically discussed plans
for the big event which he hopes
will be the turning point for a
new era in athletics t I
