Rev ROBERT H HARPER
ARCHBISHOP AND POPE
F OR the first time in recorded
history the Archbishop of Can-
terbury and the Pope of Rome
had a friendly hour together in
the Vatican palace Their meeting
has been hailed as a significant
event in church history
Though reports of the conversa-
tion between the Archbishop and
the Pope did not reveal any dis-
cussion of distinctive church mat-
ters it is thought that the meeting
of the two church leaders should
lead to a warmer feeling and a
closer relation between churches
JUST A THOUGHT:
Down through time men in
high places the good and the
bad have shown that one in-
dividual can alter the course of
history This is powerful argu-
ment for the truth that all the
"little people" of the world
working together for a common
cause can promote world
peace and understanding
All the churches of the world
including the millions in the Cath-
olic Church and the millions in the
Anglican Church and the multi-
plied millions in all the Protestant
churches could surround the earth
with a mighty united witness for
Christ
Distinctive forms and ceremo-
nies might be continued but the
spirit of Jesus and the saving pow-
er of the gospel could be largely
increased among the sons of men

LL SECOND good new show to
L I bow this fall IS "National Vel-
vet" a story of a girl and her
horse It's a bright tender and
moving story the kind there are
too few of on the TV medium these
days The story of Velvet who
yearns to win the Grand National
is well-known It marked the
first movie Liz Taylor ever made
This was only some 15 years
ago when the beauteous movie
queen was a pretty refreshing girl
of 12 or so Hard to believe
she has had four husbands and
three children since then
Now pert little Lori Martin
brings warmth and charm to the
television screen in the weekly se-
ries of Velvet adventures It's
a real family treat Mary
Frances Griffin daughter of Irene
Dunne has been cast in "Back
Street" one of the early pictures
which brought fame to Miss Dunne
Too bad about the Arthur Godfrey-Allen
Funt feud which threat-
ens a winning combination on
"Candid Camera" However
no matter how hilarious a "Cam-
era" episode is it still gives the
Impression of being rehearsed it's
so stiff and unnatural

hits on Broadway right now is

not unforgettable score Mau-

Buy A Retirement Home Early for Easy Change
‘
HERE is a pattern of retire-
ment that usually works
Take it apply it to the part of
the country you like best modify
a corner here and there and the
Golden Years will be within your
reach
The pattern comes from a lady:
"Three summers ago" she
says "my husband and I were
spending our vacation in Colo-
redo visiting relatives We were
still six years short of retirement
but my husband decided that
while we were in Colorado we
should begin looking for a retire-
ment home He wanted a small
piece of land wanted it north of
Denver and wanted it on a rivei
and near the mountains
"I almost broke into tears We
had been living in a lovely sub-
urb back east for 25 years We
had a modest home and many
friends I was happy Anyway
when we had moved from the
city to the suburbs I had said this
was as far from civilization as
I'd ever go "
The husband persisted and went
looking He found what he wanted
"And I knew when I saw it"
says the wife "that it was for
me too"
' It was two acres of land on a
black-top road with a river in
back and the mountains in the
distance It was 14 miles from
the town of Longmont an an
hour's drive from Denver It was
a mile from stores
"We have managed to get back
to Colorado twice a year since
we bought our place" the wife
continues "and this past sum-
mer with retirement still three

THE WEEK'S LETTER: "I
read your column every week and
think it's pretty good But you've
never talked about my problem
now do I get a date? I am eight
een and have never had one I
am quiet average looking rather
handsome or ugly would rather
read than play football or other
sports I am interested in girls—
in one particular girl although
she doesn't know it—yet I just
don't know how to go about letting
her know and I am afraid to ask
her for a date Even if I were
years off we were able to roof
in the lower level of the house we
are building and install some
modem plumbing Next summer
we hope to pass up the nearby
motel where we have been stay-
ing on our visits and move into
our home and rough it
"There are other homes along
our road Some of the people are
in our age bracket some are re-
tired and all are busy We renew
our friendships with them every
time we go back "
The wife says she and her hus-
band will not be concerned with
changes of weather when finally
they can move into their retire-
ment home We won't have to
buck traffic or punch a time clock
We'll sit it out cozy and warm"
Here is why this sort of retire-
ment pattern works:
1 A new home takes some get-
ting used to especially if it's far
away and if you are of retirement
age Six years is not too long for
thii Six years before retirement
is better than six years after
because you're more interesting
to the natives then
2 Getting some roots in the
ground in the spot you have cho-
sen for retirement—such as buy
ing some land or starting on a
house—gives you a magnet that
keeps drawing you to the spot
Many retired people who should
move from their old homes and
would be happier if they did
never do it because they have
built no magnets and are afraid
of the unfamiliar

able to ask her I am afraid that
she would say 'no' and then I
would be embarrassed How do I
go about it?"
OUR ANSWER: There is but
one way Summon enough cour-
age and ask her The world will
not come to a stop if she says
'no' and we think you will discover
that it is as easy to ask a girl for
a date as it is to order a hamburg
er at the drug store lunch counter
There is a difference of course
in the way it should be done Don't
just walk up to the girl and say
"Mary will you go to the movies
with me?" make conversation
first about the weather whatvar
happens to be "news" about tha
school town or the nation Don't
overdo it just break the ice then
ask for the date
A boy should never be "afraid"
to ask a girl for a date Whether
her answer is "yes" or "no" the
girl considers it a compliment to
have been asked This is true if
she knows the boy If he is a per
fect stranger to her then she
thinks him "fresh" and believes
probably rightly so that he asks
every pretty girl he sees for a date
So we repeat don't be "afraid"
Let the girl know you like her
She probably knows it already
but make sure she knows Begin
with pleasant conversation—then
ask her She will probably say
"yes" But if she says "no" you
will at least have the satisfaction
of knowing that there's nothing
really difficult about asking it girl
for a date
