U S Airforce Begins Experimental
Recruit-By-Telephone Idea Here
Taking a cue from Oklahoma businessmen airforce recruiters
began a full-scale experiment
May 1 to cut the cost of individual
recruiting and save the taxpayers
thousands of dollars
The experiment a new "call
collect" system which will save
many miles of travel for re-
cruiters was explained today by
MSgt J L Patterson Edmond
recruiter
"The new plan makes it pos-
sible for young men and women
in the Edmond area who are in-
terested in talking about joining
the airforce to call me collect at
my office in Oklahoma City"
Sergeant Patterson said "In this
way I can determine the appli-
cant's qualifications and make a
definite appointment instead of
making long and sometimes un-
productive motor trips" Patter-
son added
The plan involves all airforce
recruiters in the state and is
directed by headquarters of the
409th USAF recruiting detach-
ment in Oklahoma City
Major Arthur L Moss com-
mander of the 409th stated that
the plan stemmed from Oklahoma
businessmen who employ a call
collect system that reportedly
saves thousands of dollars a year
Patterson said the average call
from an applicant in his area will
be approximately 45 cents "This
obviously is cheaper than driv-
ing 20 miles to interview an un-
qualified applicant" he said
In March this year Oklahoma's
23 recruiters drove 44234 miles on
their appointed itineraries Under
the "call collect" system the
mileage is anticipated to be at
least pne third less and the pre-
sent operating expenditure can
be shaved by $6000 per year
The plan was first tried at the
Lawton recruiting station where
it proved so successful and econo-
mical that in one month MSgt
Arnold Thompson saw production
jump 151 percent while operating
costs shrunk
