Veit Sherman 1145 Brit-
ton Road veteran Britton
luneral director lashed out
this week at the proposed
pinn for a city-county forgue
which was discussed Mon-
day at a meeting of the Ok-
lahoma City Traffic and
Safety Commission "There
are 20 well equipped mor-
gues in the county at the
present time" he said "1
suggest we use one of them
if it is necessary and if our
strained city budget has any
money left pass it on to the
underpaid employees"
Sherman quoted Major Clay
Scheid head of the city police
traffic department as saying
"When people must lie On the
street 30 or 40 minutes waiting
for an ambulance it's time to
do something" Sherman stated
that he is in favor of the pro-
posed zoning plan for ambulances
Ile pointed out that about
fivc years ago city funeral di-
rectors with the exception of
him made a contract with a
former funeral director to hand-
le all emergency calls in the
city This he said is the Am-
bulance Service Co
"All the downtown funeral
homes had to offer at this meet-
ing" Sherman declared "was
the city-county morgue idea It
appears to me that they have
no interest whatsoever in sav-
ing lives and that their only
concern is 'what shall we do
with the dead and who will be
called?' "
He said that he was "berated"
at the meeting by "a spokes-
man for the ambulance group"
for charging only $5 for ambu-
lance calls "The mini MU m
charge by this firm" he explain-
ed "is $10 and they charge $15
and more for emergem:y calls
He also said that his firm lost
about $4000 last year on its op-
eration" "There is something definte-
ly wrong here" Sherman said
"Since the funeral heimes con-
solidated their ambulance ser-
vice our business has increased
400 per cent and we clear a
little money charging only half
what they do Proper equip-
ment properly operated is the
answer"
Stating that ambulance firms
are regulated more rigidly than
anN other business Sherman
added "It's the old liquidation
principle One has been elimi-
nated Zoning is the answer
here just as it was with wreck-
er service No one should be al-
lowed to suffer bleed and per-
haps die so that the funeral
home ambulance can pick up
$15"

city council Tuesday night
Fie stated that more than

of the entire amount due
has been collected in 21 days
since the charge was leveled
"We have had very little con-
fusion and tirlirisingly few
complaints" he told councilmen

Mayor Fred 1law2 ported out
that the Vii!age received an ele-

is a direct benefit from the city

Vice-mayor Clark Horton ex-
plained that the Village sewer
service charge of $150 is lower
than that of most sulitniian
cities and that hc thinks it is a
very 1iir and equitable tax
Councilmen agreed that it
would take a little more public
education and asked the help
of news media in explaining
again to residents that the charge
has appeared for years on their
tax statement but that many
families buying homes through
loan COMpanics have not seen
the tax receipt and didn't rea-
lize that they were paying it
It was pointed out again that
escrows will be increased for
home owners under the thiw
plan and that the charge is
