Surprise!
Last weekend Mrs Jack
(Martha) Norris (also Mayfair)
was in Dallas attending the gift
show for the Foster Floral Co
which meant of course that she
couldn't be home for her birth-
day But that didn't daunt
hubbie a bit! lie merely cele-
brated the event ahead of time
— with a party in her honor on
Valentine's Day! It was a com-
plete surprise to Martha with
some 13 friends descending on
the Norris household with gifts
meeting afterwards for a special
dinner at Sussy's

However vith all this cute-
ness went a tremendous
amount of information about
one of the most fascinating of
all subjects — the weather
What for example is a cloud?
What is snow? What causes
winds? Thunderstorms? A I I
these things were bandied
about and there were superb
color films of convulsions of
"I buy all my food
at Kimberling's Because
of that I am a
perfect cook never
have a dinner my husband
doesn't like! Isn't that
right dear?"
50th and Shartel
The tornado shots alone
were worth the price of ad-
mission Buildings literally ex-
ploded in front of our eyes
The twisters moved across the
horizon and practically right
into your living room a tor-
rent of destruction The hurri-
cane shots particularly of one
Maggie which hit Florida
were the last words in hurri-
canes if you like hurricanes
and naturally everyone does
Man has thought about the
weather for centuries but he
has hnown relatively little
about it until comparatively
recently This show was inter-
larded with the work of the
United States Weather Bureau
and its fascinating Air Force
planes that plunge into hurri-
canes and plot their direction
Ultimately they'll try to
change their course As a mat-
ter of fact the emphasis now
is switching from simple pre-
diction of weather to ultimate
efforts to control it
While all this is perfectly
fascinating stuff I found it
rather sticky going when gim-
micked up by all the cartoons
and the monkey business Dr
Frank Baxter is one of my
flvorite college professors and
his lectures on Shakespeare
are a delight But these pretty
little over-simplifications show
him at his worst which I must
admit is still pretty darned
good
I have always felt that the
whole point of an educational
television show is lost if you
"Yes dear Kimberling's
is unquestionably a
very fine grocery store"
ERMIG'S
try to mix too much entertain-
ment in with it
People who want education
seek education people who
want entertainment seek it
You can quite easily on these
shows wind up being neither
entertained nor educate d
Every so often the cute gim-
micks tend to obscure the
point rather than spread enlightenment-
And there's no
doubt that some of them take
forever to pass a given point
leading one to wonder at what
age level Mr Capra is aiming
If it's for the very young then
9 pm EST when the show
began it too late an hour If
it's tn the average guy then
the show is looking down its
nose a little too much We're
more intelligent than that
Still if you could sit
through the gimmicks there
were some spectacular shots
of clouds and storms and wild-
ly pitching oceans and light-
ning and thunder that made it
all worthwhile "The Un-
chained Goddess" is the third
of a series of color films shown
by the Bell System this year
The others were "The Strange
Case of the Cosmic Rays" and
"Our Mr Sun" Bell Telephone
will make available 16 mm
color prints for showing in
schools
