It is to be hoped that after the
United States gets through with
Mexico she will annex Canada
and then take charge of South
America
There seem to have been con-
siderable bad whiskey in circula-
tion last Saturday night' and
Sunday Two fights reported
one in Wilburton and one at
Lutie
The murder of President Ma-
dero and vice-president Pino
Suarez in the streets of the City
of Mexico shortly after midnight
Monday was one of the most
cowardly murders of modern
times The explanation offered
is nauseous in- the extreme It
was no doubt a diabolical plan
deliberately carried out to get
rid of both president and vice-
president The only question is
has the United States any right
to interfere with this band of
murders? Humanity says that
they should be civilized or chased
off the face of the earth
The professional juror bailiff
etcastera will stand up to empty
racks at the March term of the
District Court A few days ago
it was discovered that there was
about $2000 warrants outstand-
ing on the court fund which
made the said court fund look
like a Mexican quarter It was
boastingly ( campaign boasts )
said the affairs of the county had
beed conducted in such an excel-
lent and economical manner that
jurors and witnesses would not
be obliged to “soak” their war-
rants to some kind-hearted offi-
cial to get money enough to get
home on for there would be
plenty in the treasury It is in-
deed very strange that this little
item escaped the notice of the
vigilant distributors of the peo-
ples’ money and bob up at this
inoportune time
That lack of funds has render-
ed it impossible to try jury cases
during the March term of Dis-
trict court should cause the ordi-
nary good citizen to stop iind
consider “whither are we drift-
ing” It is to be presumed that
the Excise Board “threw the
lever into the last notch” when
making their estimates yet we
find the treasury practically
empty without a single term of
county court and only one term
of the district court If this be
true we should like to know
when it will be possible to hold
court and clean up the docket?
It is high time for the represent-
atives to turn their attention
from political feuds they have
been engaged in during the
greater part of Digression and
do something for the relief of
the tax-burdenecl office-ridden
people '
HOLDING THEIR FEET TO THE
-FIRE
Just before the last city elec-
tion it was stated that the city
was financially in fine condition
A little later there was talk of
funding the city for between
$8000 and $12000 to pay off back
salaries and other accumulated
debts It was hinted that if an
attempt was made to issue fund-
ing bonds that they would re-
ceive a severe jolt when brought
before the District Judge as the
debts were contracted in excess
of the estimates and levies and
the proposition died Still a lit-
le later suits were brought by
the Chief of Police and night
watch for salaries unpaid and
judgement secured The city
council rose in righteous indig-
nation and swore by the shades

of Jefferson that they would not
be held up in such a brigandish
manner and ordered the city at-
torney to appeal the cases which
he did and prepared his briefs
However the fight was brief
In the mean time the funding
bond proposition was resuscitat-
ed but it was rumored that the
Socialists would lay violent hands
on it should it ever be brought
from under cover and it was put
to sleep again The council were
in a dilema Salaries for several
months were due and no hopes
of funding bonds coming to their
rescue They had openly put up
a fight against collecting by suit
and they wailed: “Oh you sal-
aries! The only hope was to dis-
miss the appeal cases and sue
themselves and thus obtain
judgement By becoming both
plaintiff and defendant it is easy
to conceive the result of such a
suit
