The European war just had to come The
Kaiser couldn’t stand on his toes forever
In applying for his next job as King Wil-
liam of Wied will carefully omit mention of
his recent one-night stand in Albinia
Mr Wilson’s decision not to take the
stump is also to be commended for its recog-
nition that the war news is now monopolizing
the entire front page '
They are talking again ahout making
bread from cotton seed because of the Euro
pean war Have you forgotten that this same
folly was sprung on the people some six or
seven years ago ? Scat with your cotton Seed
biscuit ! Let old P’de have her meal and seed
Wheat makes bread for human beings and if
we will put a part of the cotton lands in that
grain we will be doing something sensible '
' The attempt of the opposition press to
belittle President Wilson’s efforts to increase
the revenues is idiotic in the extreme It is
characteristic of the dishonest one-sided
method of political discussion Yet never a
fool in all the land who does not know it to be
in every intent and purpose an absurd lie
The war in Europe has cut our reveues at
least $100000000 annually This loss must
be made good or the Government goes to dis-
honorable protest What is to be thought of
newspapers which advocate that measure ?
The fatal mistake of William’ II as of
Napoleon is that at heart he is a materialist He
believes that the battle goes always to the
strongest battalions of spiritual forces he is
contemptuous or ignorant He has enlisted
F against himself in Belgium that very passion '
of Nationality which in Spain proved the de-
' struction of Napoleon Yet whatever the
bloodshed whatever the agony thru which
Europe now has to pass the spiritual forces
will crush the Kaiser’s ambition in the end
Not with impunity ! can the despot defy all
or any of the moral laws on which Christian-
ity and civilization depend today
The closing of the port of Vera Cruz by
order of Carranza Is not the result of as in-
discretion of a minor official as was the ar-
rest of the marines at Tampico 'It was an
open defiance by the present head of the
Mexican Nation and designed to provoke ac-
tion by the United States If there was any
doubt about the meaning of Carranza's pre-
vious action that doubt is now removed by
his order that all train service to Vera Cruz
be suspended The obvious intention is to cut
off 'the supplies of the American troops bot-
tling them up and if possible drive them out
The theory expressed in many parts of Mex-
ico that President Carranza is deliberately
trying to provoke this country to war feeling
that such hostilities would increase his popu-
larity with the Mexicans is plausible
From1 the 'first it was the forecast that
Austria would prove a hroken reed to Ger-
many It embraced the chief of the Kaiser’s
crucial miscalculations The attitude of Eng-
land and the resistance of Belgium were only
second to it Yet considering what these
errors of judgment implied to his original
plans of camaign what he has accamplished
solitary and alone is little less than amazing
Hp had indeed perfected a wonderful fighting
machine He set out however to do the im-
possible— that is to conquer the world— yvhich
can never be done Napoleon tried it and
made an inglorious failure But he came far
nearer to it than Wilhelm will ever come
There should be no luke-warmness about
the movement to improve the cotton market
' There should be no disposition on the part of
any Comanche zitizens who ought to be at the
foretront of the buy-a-eale movement to treat
it as an innovation but asa wholesome and
upbuilding undertaking That will be! the
right view and the right spirit Push the plan
to the limit of its greatest possibilities
The Rivers and Harbors Bill is only one
of the measures pending in Congress and call-
ing for heavy expenditures that could be halt-
ed at this time to the advantage of the Fed-
eral Treasury and the Nation Is it positively
necessary to lay on an extra tax ?’ 1 ' f
Some foolish advisers are calling attention
to the fact that now is the psychological’ time
for Ireland to go after home rule— forgeting
of course that the Irish disdain anything and
everything they do notba've to fight for"
The shade of C W Post returns to help
the cotton-raisers who live within the sphere
of his estate’s possessions in Texas
Four important cotton exchanges have re-
sumed spot operations during the week
