REPUBLICAN PROSPERITY
In 1899 under Democratic rule
Mr Lae proprietor of the Lee
Hotel of Oklahoma City wanted
topurohaaea lot adjoining the
preaent ait of the hotel He waa
naked 450 for it but timea were
hard and he couldn't raiae the
money After nearly eight yeara
of Republican rule h o proa

EXPANSION
It appeara to the Gazette that
the only difficulty in getting the
city limits extended under the
provisions of the new law is an
attempt to block it by certain in
dividunle who aeem to have a
morbid fear that such extension
- will not be pleasing in the sight
of the coal companies The law
provides for the platting of such
other towna or parts of towns on
the segregated lands as the aeo
retary of the interior may deem
desirable
The coal leases entitle the
lesee to aa much of the surface
of the lease aa ia necessary for
- the operation of the mines
This doea not mean' that they
shall -furnish tenement houses
for persons who are not in their
employ or furnish sites on whioh
to conduct a business foreign to
mining- '
Just why parties who are de
pending upon the citizens of the
town for their daify bread will
take a stand detrimental to the
welfare and upbuilding of the
town ia remarkable to say the
'least r if ' -
i The Gazette has nb desire to
deprive the coal companies of
any of their vested rights but
' insist that they remain in undis
turbed possession of all rights
and privileges that their leases

July was named for Julius Caesar
by Mark Antony Mark waa
Caeaat’a protege His career wai
very much like that of Mr Taft
Caesar liked him and whenever be
came around tbe great dictator
would slap him on the back with
some such exclamation aa "Mark
I will make you a tribune!" He
kept his word -too' and always
delivered the goods to Mark at the
Roman conventions Mark made
the funeral oration (or Caesar and
be stirred up the Roman populace
until it wrecked the baseball park
looking for Brutus and the rest of
the Msfia He was also the origi-
nator of the affinity Idea His af
finity was Cleopatra and every
time he returned from Egypt his
wile and his- mother in law met
him at the dock with a set of golf
clubs He eventually became the
virtual ruler of Egypt instituted
local option and other reforms
barged with the queen upon the
(moonlit Nile and killed' himself
while he was happy knowing it
couldn’t last
July th Fourth will dawn again
diverting circumstance and the
bubbling boy will light his punk
before he finds his pants He’ll
roll down stairs with screams of
joy contemptuous of hurt and
start the battle when he burnB the
tail off of his shirt
The youthful cannoneer will
charge his powder by the pound
and while he does it many kids
will boldly crowd around He’ll
light the fuse and they will skip
but when they fail to get the
proper thrill they'll go to see if it
iB lighted vet A loud ker-bang
(a scurvy thing a cannon some-
times does) and the angels ' look-
ing down will sigh “By hoky-
poke it wast"
On the 33d the sub will enter
the Zodiacal sign of Leo the Lion
This will make Mr Roosevelt roar
and mollycoddles nature ' fakers
rich malefactors reactionaries and
liars will take to their holes Sea
lions will terrify the young navy
recruit and labor ‘ will knock off
every' twenty minutes and rush
the growler
Boys born under Leo make good
harvest hands and want f8 a day
They have a keen senae of smell
and itart for the house before the
meals are half cooked They
roar upon very slight provocation
never pay their bill until the gas is
(hut off and generally get the
lion’s share oi an estate if appoint-
ed administrator
The wife and children will resort
where they can swim sail and
they’ll write for money ev-ry time
the boat takes ’ out the mail
They'll keep poor Papa slaving
hian a digging in his j'eans and
while they’re eating pompano
he’ll - make out on sardines
They’ll also live on mountain trout
and muskelonge and croaker and
Pa will try to pay for it with what
he wins at poker He’ll cheat like
Bret Harte’s Chinaman and when
he shall beseech forgiveness down
upon his knees and heaven seems
out of reach his plea shall be
"Forgive me Lord my folks are
at the beach!"
POLITICAL ADVERTISEMENT
Some of ' the newspapers are
making1 a great noise about the
law requiring newspapers to mark
all political advertisement as such
and the piice ' charged The
Gazette is of the opinion that the
law will be a great relief to the
honest and conscientious publish
er It often happens that' some
man aspires to office whose past
life has not been as sn open book
His frequent departures from the
paths ot rectitude is perhaps bet
ter known to the editor than any-
one else Tha candidate brings in
a biographical aketch for publics
tion which if true would entitle
him to a front seat in the celestial
choir It ia so worded at to make
the editor a party to tha crime
J Marking it political advertising
relieves the editor of all respon
llbilftv T1 public than under
stand ' thaf John Doe says that
John Doe is an upright honest
gentleman and )s worthy pl 'any
trust that may ba reposed in him
Also that ha is paying so much
