Why Olrl Leave Home
Manager Dexter will present
at the opera house on Tuesday
March 31 E J Carpenter’s pro
duction of Fred Summerfield’s
emotional melodrama “Why Girls
Leave Home” It is said the title
does not indicate the full value
of the play It is a melodrama
whioh does not depend upon red
fire or burning powder to give it
interest and it does not resort to
meohanical contrivances al-
though it is effectively mounted
Besides furnishing a wholesome
evening’s entertainment the play
inculoates a valuable lesson to
wit that for girls at least the
poet’s advice is sound and it is
better to bear the ills we have
than fly to others we know not
of The plot hinges upon the ex
periences of a young girl who is
induced to leave a father restrict
ed home life by a designing vil
lain and lives to regret her hasty
step The process by whicn she
1' a-ns her lesson is more saluta
ly than pleaeant Pearl Sher
wood is a pure minded girl in
family near New York and she
responds when the dazzling lights
of the great city invite her to
come and participate in its fol
lies There is a scene in a wine
room where a good deal of roug-
ery is developed and where
Pearl Sherwood discovering the
true character of her associates
throws wine in the face of those
who connive against her and
flees from the path she is follow
ing From that time until the
knavery is overtaken there is ex-
citement of various sorts She is
abducted held prisoner is the
victim of a scheming woman and
a man who is thoroughly bad but
in the end she escapes it all The
play is beautifully staged the
cafe and prison scenes being par-
ticularly effective
