"They wish to be the cynosure of all

Geste like if at least for a moment in
the bright flare they stand revealed "
said Hubbard, who began his study of
terrorism with skyjackers during the
early 1970s
Those interviewed agreed that media
coverage plays a key rule in terrorist
acts such as the hostage drama in
Washington. DC it provides a
spotlight the participants would not
otherwise have
Authorities divide terrorist situations
into three categories Political or
ideological terrorists, criminals who
take hostages, such as in a bank rob-
bery gone wrong, and psychotics, usu-
ally suffering from a severe lack of
self esteem, who seek public ity
For one reason, he is a Lawtonian, his wife is a Lawtonian and
they hope their children will be Lawtonians. Lawton has every
facility for educating its youth, but so little to offer them in job
opportunities. Ashley Cagle is hopeful that a seat on the city
council will put him in a position to actively seek new industry
and to help the city solve the problems that now prevent growth

lenge, said Hacker, who urges crea-
tion of skilled negotiating teams with
experts from various disciplines in
eluding psychiatry, anthropology and
linguistics
Hostage negotiating teams exist in
many cities Their primary members
usually are police officers Their aim
is to establish contact and then try to
wait until the terrorist is ready to give
up
Several experts said that one diffi
culty encountered in such a situation
occurs when reporters try to contact
the gunman or his hostages

side is the isolation and loneliness this

Dr Frederick Hacker a Beverly
Hills Calif psychiatrist, sums up the
three categories as "Crusaders, Crimi
nals. Crazies’ in a recent book by that
name on terror and terrorism
Those in Washington belong in the
crusading category. which doesn’t say
that they're not crazy," he said in a
telephone interv iew
The whole point is that this is not
senseless violence Unfortunately it's a
focused violence that in the terms of
the terrorist is meeting with very
great success," he said How else can
you get that type- of interest and pub
licity?
That's why I call terrorism a mush
rooming growth industry with a lot of
glamour stock and have predicted,
along with many other people that we
are going into a period of escalated
terrorism said Hacker
The sad thing is that we are almost
totally unprepared to meet (he chai
