Privett Eyes
May 1 Date
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)-
The House of Representatives
has its eye on a May 1 adjourn-
ment.
House Speaker Rex Privett
said Thursday the House will
clear its calendar by April 16 in
an effort to hit the deadline.
The House currently is work-
ing on Senate bills. The speak-
er said he felt the house would
complete consideration of 70
measures by April 16—the date
of a statewide election on a pro-
posed constitutional amendment
that would free $10.5 million for
appropriation this year. The
amendment is part of a school
finance plan.
If the amendment is adopted.
Privett said, the budget will be
set for next fiscal year and
members would start passing
conference committee reports
on appropriations.
“If the people turn it down,
then we will devote all our time
to securing additional tax reve-
nue,” Privett said

TULSA (AP) — Tulsa vice
squad officer Dennit Morris ear-
ly Friday was found innocent of
manslaughter in the death of
Robert Ferguson. The verdict
came less than two hours after
the case was turned over to the
jury at 11:05 p.m. Thursday.
The 31-year-old officer was
charged with first-degree man-
slaughter in the death of Fer-
guson. 29. who was shot during
a gambling raid Feb. 17 in a
north Tulsa home.
The defense rested its case
Thursday after Morris and sev-
eral character witnesses testi-
fied.
Morris said he tried repeated-
ly to separate fellow officer
Gary James and Ferguson
while they were struggling on
the floor during the raid. He fi
nally struck Ferguson on the
head with his pistol, he said,
and the gun discharged ac-
cidentally and shot the man.
Morris said he saw the handle
of a knife in Ferguson's hand
as he struggled with James.
James testified earlier that he
saw a knife but did not know
whether it was in Ferguson's
hand.
Several witnesses testified
earlier that Morris took aim
and fired at Ferguson as he lay
on the floor.

TULSA (AP) — A Roman
Catholic priest who was ousted
from the Archdiocese of Chica-
go last month said he planned
to return there Friday to stay.
The Rev. Francis X. Lawlor
was removed from his teaching
position at Chicago's St. Rita's
High School in early February,
allegedly because of his views
on racial issues. Since then, he
has been teaching at Cascia
Hall, a Roman Catholic prepar-
atory school in Tulsa.
The Rev. Martin J. O'Neill.
Cascia Hall headmaster, said
Thursday he was unaware of
Father Lawlor’s intention to
leave the school.
Father Lawlor said he had
asked the permission of John
Cardinal Cody, archbishop of
Chicago, to return but has re-
ceived no reply.
The priest said his difficulties
with the cardinal concerned the
"hlock clubs” he organized
while in Chicago. The aim of
the clubs, he said, is to hold on
to as many white residents as
possible in “changing neighbor-
hoods.”
“The issue is of such an im-
mediate nature," he said, "that
I do not feel my return to Chi-
cago can be longer delayed.”
"The people who are giving
him (the cardinal) information
about me are distorting the
facts,” he said.
He said he plans to live with !
friends in Chicago and hopes to
return to work with the block I
clubs.
