Americans planning a trip

little difficulty with the lan-

the cost of living here. in
American terms, is startlingly

Munich residents look upon

THERE’S a shortage of ho-
tels here, however, as there
apparently is throughout Eur-
ope. Plans are being advanced
to build more hotels in
preparation for the Olympics.
Meals are cheap here. You
can buy a delicious Bavarian
meal for a sum that would
buy a sandwich at home. If
you’ve got 75 cents in your
pocket, you’ll not go hungry
in Munich.
The City Hall, for example,
houses a low-priced, munici-
pally - owned restaurant. In
the City Hall’s Ratskeller, au-
thentic Bavarian dinners are
served in a setting of vaulted
oak arches, large beer kegs
and rough-hewn wooden tables
that could have come straight
from “The Student Prince.”
The Germans love their
beer, too. And the place to go
is the boisterous Hofbrauhaus
—Germany s largest beer hall.
Literally thousands of gallons
of beer are consumed here
each night.
I drank in the sights the
evening I visited the Hofbrau-
haus during a brief stay in
Munich. One large stein of
beer can last most of the eve-
ning, or it did for this non-
beer drinker. Everyone gath-
ers at long tables and bench-
es to imbibe and listen to a
noisy, fun-loving brass band.
Everyone sings, too.
