$136 million in the fiscal 1966
budget needed to keep this great
navigation project on schedule.
Our problem is the need for ad-
ditional monetary authoriza-
tions. These authorizations are
in the ominbus Rivers and Har-
bors Bill, but this omnibus bill
may not be passed and signed
into law by late July, 1965, and
any delay beyond this date would
result in temporary costly stop-
page of work. To allieviate this
problem, Congressman Ed Ed-
mondson and I and the Oklaho-
ma delegation have introduced
a separate bill, relating to 10
such projects and providing
$115 million additional authori-
zation for the Arkansas. This
bill will provide a faster ve-
hicle for these needed author-
izations and assure that barges
will be able to move from the
Gulf of Mexico to Catoosa by
1970 as scheduled.
VERYTHING IN THE
.ST9REONSALE. I
As a member of the Senate
Public Works Committee, I
strongly support the maximum
conservation and use of Amer-
ica’s water resources.
We began hearings last week
on the omnibus Rivers and Har-
bors Bill.
I am, of course, especially in-
terested in our vital Oklahoma
water projects, and I want to
report this week on some of
those under the jurisdiction of
the Corps of Engineers.
CENTRAL OKLAHOMA. This
multiple purpose project will
provide the benefits of naviga-
tion to central and western Ok-
lahoma. When it is finshed,
harges will be able to come from
the Arkansas River, through the
Eufaula Reservoir and up the
Deep Fork, to the edge of Okla-
homa City. The projects is now
being studied by the Rivers and
Harbors Board. I nave vigor-
