the score. The Mountaineers had
opportunities to win the game in
the eighth, but couldn’t come up
with a crucial hit at the right time.
The home team won the game
in their half of the eighth on a
close play at the plate on a
fieiders choice ground ball.
Merklen was the losing pitcher in
relief of the starting pitcher, Gar-
rett.
In the second game, another
extra Inning affair, the Moun-
taineers won 2-1 in nine innings.
Foster went all the way allowing
only five hits and striking out
eleven. Faulkenberry scored the
winning run.
“Our pitching has been super,
we have had some well pitched
ball games," he said.
On the hitting, he said, "We
score how many runs we need to
win. We may win 1-0 in the first
game, and then turn around and
win 10-9 the second game."
“Everything is starting to blend
together; hitting, pitching,
defense and our bench strength.
We have been getting some ex-
cellent playing and hitting from
our men on the bench, and this is
what it takes to win games," he
concluded.
In game one, Eastern built a 6-2
lead after four innings, but the
visitors scored twice in the top
of the fifth to cut the lead to 6-4.
There was no more scoring in
the game. Lewis and Merklen
paced the offense as both drove
in a pair of runs.

The Mountaineers then travel-
ed to Ft. Smith, AR, on March 25
to take on the Westark Lions.
Eastern lost a 3-2 decision in
the first game, but rallied behind
a strong pitching performance
from Kevin Foster to take the se-
cond game 2-1.
In the first game, an eight-
inning affair, the Mountaineers
held a 2-1 lead going into the
seventh, but Westark rallied to tie

The first game was a close
contest with the visitors holding
a 3-1 lead after 4% innings.
Sophomore Todd Smalley closed
the gap to 3-2 with a solo
homerun in the bottom half of the
inning.
The Mountaineers then tied the
game in the bottom of the sixth
with a run from Jay Lewis. Murray
took a 4-3 lead in the top of the
seventh, but the Mountaineers
fought back and tied the score at
four apiece at the end of seven.
f
In winning the second game,
the Mountaineer bats came alive
for nine runs and 12 hits. Steve
Bass went three for four with a
home run and two RBI's. Others
with a good day at the plate were
Lewis, two for four; Kauk, two for
four; Ketchum, one for one;
Riedemann, one for two; and
Weed, one for two. Foster was
the winning pitcher in relief of
Liebenau.
On March 30, the Mountaineers
traveled to Oscar Rose and swept
a pair by scores of 1-0 and 10-1.
Merklen pitched a one-hitter in
the first game, walking one while
striking out seven. The lone run
of the game was scored in the
fifth inning when, with one out,
Bass singled, stole second, and
scored on a clutch two out single
by Faulkenberry.
The second game was all
Mountaineers, though, as they
drove three hurlers off the mound
in the onslaught. Lewis went
three for three with three RBI's
and Ketchum went three for three
with three RBI's.
Liebenau was the winning pit-
cher as he went all the way in
posting his fifth win of the year.
With the record now standing
at 18-4, Coach Shannon is
naturally pleased with the team’s
performance.
In the second game Eastern
found themselves trailing 3-2
after five innings of play.
However, in the bottom of the
sixth, with the score still 3-2, and
with two outs and two on,
freshman Darren Delong cracked
a two-run double to put the Moun-
taineers on top. Delong then
scored on a double by Mark Col-
ascco. Cowan picked up the win
going six innings, allowing only
five hits with two strike-outs.
Merklen came in and got the
save, pitching the last inning.
The Mountaineers played
Southwest, Iowa, on March 28 at
home, and swept a double header
by scores of 6-2 and 9-2.
Garrett was the winping pit-
cher in the first game, going all
the way, allowing five hits and
