Although the journalistic world
seems filled with all the Journals nec-
essary to meet the varying taste and
demand of the reading world we send
the Herald forth feeling that there Is
yet a place for It because of the spe-
cial message It is to carry It comes
to greet the reading world with its
first Issue with the hope that a place
will be found for It and that It will re-
ceive a cordial welcome by those who
read Its columns
On the 17th of November The Creek
Baptist Association met In extra ses-
sion to carry out the plans adopted by
the Association I nits regular session
to build a district academy Because
of this new movement and the proba-
bility of a misunderstanding arUlng It
became necessary tor the asaoctation
to create this organ to rightly aet its
project before the thinking world The
policy of the Herald therefore will be
First to defend the educational and
missionary work of the Creek Baptist
Association Second to furniah what-
ever denominational news and instruc-
tion that will he helpful to the Baptist
denomination Third to encourage the
members of our race In tbelr effort to
worthily perform tboae things which
aer necessary to racial uplift Fourth
to defend the race agalnat attacks
made upon It by Its enemtes and to
publish the truth concerning events
that Affect the race that the thinking
world may see ua In a proper light
Fifth to help Negroee amid the dark-
ness of their racial life to know that
the day Is coming
With this purpose in mind the Hei-
aid cornea forth to begin Its life in the
Journalistic world The Herald's mot-
to will be "Whatsoever ye would that
men do to you de ye even so to them"

Effective organisation la the only
hope of racial success This Is an
age of combinations Never before
in the world's history have men
achieved the success In the Industrial
world as has crowned tbelr efforts In
the twentieth century What ahs been
the cause of such stupendous achieve-
ments? They owe tbelr successes to
effective organlxatlon The Negro
must catch the spirit of the age If be
would keep pace with the movements
along all lines
o
If the moral tone of the society of
our towns Is to be changed for the
better it will be necessary for the pas-
tors and religious leaders to get to-
gether In organisation which will look
after the common good of the people
These organizations should be non-
denominational and should consider
questions which relate to morals and
the social affairs of the community
o
A Baptist preacher who will not co-
operate with bis brother Baptist
preacher for the good of his denomina-
tion In the town shoud not be allowed
to pastor Jealousy has no place In
the church Co-operation Is the key
t osuccess
Help ua to help each other Lord
Each other’s cross to hear
And each a starry crown receive
And reign above the sky
o
The colored women of Muskogee are
striking In the right direction In the
Federation of Clubs Great things are
the results of united effort It would
be a good Ides If the Negro men of
our town would catch the federation
spirit ’
o
Wbat good comes to the Negro race
through partisanship? Would It not
be better for colored men to organise
their political force for the benefit
of their race than to marshal them
for the benefit of the lily-white Repub-
licans or any other party? It la time
for ua to think for the benefit of our
race
o
A man that la not n Republican from
principle It not a Republican at alL
What about raising the association's
per capita fee from 10 cents for each
member of our church to 25 cents?
We are building a school and must
raise more money Who will vote for
it? Get your church to vote for It
and notify the editor of the Creek Bap-
tist Herald
o
Ministers of the Gospel ought not to
drink alcoholic liquors It lowers their
moral standing In the community
where they pastor ‘
- o
RELIGION
Christianity Is as progressive as
anyythlng else It keeps pare with
the changes of every age and Is as
much suited to the progressive spirit
of the twentieth century as it was
adapted to meet the need of any oth-
er age In fact it is the cause of the
progress of thia age It will take all
time for man to receive the full bene-
fits of Christianity The restlessness
of the age Is a result of the freedom
that man has received front It Of
course this freedom Is being abused
In many instances but the ever work-
ing leaven of Christian garce will
bring the good time for all men y
o
The Baptist Church Is a pure de-
macracy Every member has equal
rights These rights should never be
Ignored by any one
o-
Negro business men never gain any-
thing by fighting each other They
should do what they can to ceate
race unity and love for racial enter-
prise by their close adherence and
patronage Negro business men
should advertise In Negro papers If
the circulation of the papers are such
as will be a good Investment for them
but that Is a question of business The
business man la trying to reach the
mass of expected customers and seeks
to do so by advertising In papers that
are Tead by the moat people Compe-
tition should be the law that glverna
business Negroes should patronise
racial enterprise but Negro business
men should compete In price quality
and quantity with other ibuslness men
aa near as possible

IS IT POSSIBLE FOR THE CREEK
BAPTIST ASSOCIATION TO BUILD
AN ACADEMY T
need a loud boisterous demonstration
of your purposes to support a Ncgo
business simply a quiet individual ef-
fort from yourself and with your
friends and neighbors
What Inspiration do you hold out
to our young men and women to be-
come educated and efficient In the
trades and professions? Do they learn
from your example that you will prop-
erly support them when they venture
According to the Statistical Report I into theiroloseu pursuits r Can they
Of tSfBiauatleian of ths Creek HaP'scfTy Wnhl fbu lave done for others
tiat-Association- ths Association has
fifty-nine churches and 8322 members
Can these fifty-nine churches with a
membership of 8322 build an acad-
emy? They can if it Is possible to
effect an organisation In which they
can have confidence The association
has effected an organization which so
conforms to business methods that It
will secure the confidence of all who
can understand Its nature The as-
sociation has not been Incorporated
but in order that other associations
and Individuals may help If they
choose to do so we Incorporated the
school as a Joint stock association
with a capital stock of $25000 and
shares at $2500 each If each church
In the district will subscribe for two
shares each pastor one share the as-
sociation three hundred shares Wo-
man's Association fifty shares that
will bring a revenue of $2570 a year
until the capital stock Is paid In
Twenty-five thousand dollars will be
adequate to start an academy On the
day of the organization of the Aca-
demic AsBolcation the pastors and
deacons who were present subscribed
for 160 shares which amounts to $3-
000 Moderator Reed 12 shares of
$300 Secretary J H Lewis $25
Treasurer M J Sango $250 Rev L
W Sango $250 Rev N A Robinson
$250 Dr Kersh $50 Rev F K
White $125
This is a good showing If others
will do as these berthren have done
It will not be long before the entire
capital stock of 1000 shares will be
taken These 1000 shares will bring
according to the requirement of $5
per year on each share $5000 annual-
ly With such a payment It will be
possible to meet the obligations of the
school
YOUR OPPORTUNITY
This world of ours la n mighty
queer place and the struggle through
life Is a problem
Our existence as a race is becom
Ing more and more problematic first
because our opoprtunltles are being
gradually closed In through Influences
without our power and second be-
cause we fall to devote an Individual
pride to the promotion of a common
advancement
A race or a community grows only
as Its people make It grow When
they stop pushing the progress stops
We clamor for education and better
school facilities We heap criticism
upon the abridgement of our civil and
political rights We lay great stress
upon the importance of living a bet-
ter religious life and yet we practice
but slightly and carelessly the habit
of spending our money where It will
do the greatest good for Jhe material
promotion and enlargement of our
business Institutions It does

How can the Negro IJoct'or sucrecd
unless you give him your patronage?
How can the Negro Druggist subsist
unless you buy your drugs and medi-
cines from them? Hoy con your gro-
cer enlarge his business unless you
give him your tiade? Bow do you
expect your children or your friend's
children to hope for success in any
line of business or pi-ofi ssion unlcsr
you as an Individual give your sup-
port and your Influence to the enlarge-
ment of their business
Every Negro merchunt will keep In
stock what you need if you convince
him that you will buy it from him
They wll Itreat you as fairly nnd give

other merchant if you reasonably de-
mand It Stick to him and let him
know that you are n partner in ills
business to the extent that your wants
are his profits and that he must sup-
ply your necessities In order to share
with you the benefits therefrom
Then again you nre spending your
money in a place where it makes a
large swing before lenving you nnd
gives your church your lodge your
social circle your race enterprises
generally a chance to got some of it
before it gets out of the roce other-
wise you place it directly in the hands
of those from whom It returns but
stingily and the gerat bulk of which
goes to open the doors of oportunlty
to other boys and girls and close the
doors of hope against yotirs
This la not a fight against another

lift of our own race — the race which
