March is American Red Cross

one of the oldest aid organizations
in the nation and the world.
The ARC is a not-for-profit orga-

The ARC also trains and certifies
lifeguards and paramedics.
In 1X59. a young Swiss man
named Henry Dunant. came upon
a bloody battlefield in Solferino,
Italy.
The battle, which was waged
between armies of Austria and the
Franco Sardinian Alliance, left
nearly 40,000 men dead or dying.
Dunant organized a group of locals
to provide medical care, food and
comfort to the soldiers.
Upon returning to Switzerland,
Dunant called for the creation of
national relief societies to assist
people wounded in war.
The International Red Cross and
Red Crescent movements were
founded in October 1863. Created
in Geneva, Switzerland, the goal
was to provide nonpartisan care to
the wounded and sick in limes of
war, adopting a Red Cross as a sign
of its neutrality.
