AN EXPLANATION
George and for that reason I did not in-
dorse all he said The above explanation
is clear and perfectly satisfactory to me
In view of what he says I most heartily in-
dorse his position This narrows the
question one-third so far as I know
Rather I know of no one now that is op
posed to taking the children to the house
of the Lord and teaching them Many
fail to do that but men fail to do a good
many things that are right As the matter
now stands the only question is the meth-
od This indeed is the question at the
foundation of all of our troubles with the
Christian church Well in view of this
fact it seems to me that our S S advo-
cates ought to proceed very cautiously
lest they find themselves in line with the
very men and methods they have been con
tending against Be patient brethren
What we want is unity We can have it
on the Book but in no other way Re-
member we are a Book people I would
like to see the question investigated but
not discussed in the ordinary acceptation
of the term That is I do not want to see
two men try to expose and down each oth-
er but I do want brethren to enter into a
conscientious search for the will and wish
of God in regard to the question He has
said what he wants and it is for us to find
out what he has said and gladly accept it
and be governed by it If he has not
spoken then we are not bound in the mat-
ter and to go beyond what is written is en-
tirely to dangerous for me R
says he was is an nntruthful infidel' That
is awfully near total depravity A man
can not get much worse and he is certain-
ly as bad as the devil wants him to be
The faith of Christians comes by hear-
ing the word of God (Rom 10: 17) The
word of God teaches that baptism is for
the rsmissson of sins (Acts 2: 36) We
believe the word of God therefore we
believe that baptism is for tbe remission
of sins This is what the Landmark
calls “a dangerous faith” To disbelieve
that baptism is for the remission of sins
is infidelity The Baptists do not be-
lieve that baptism is for the remission of
sins therefore they are infidels Yes
they may be rignt after all in saying they
know there is such a thing as total de-
pravity Poor Baptists
PUBLISHERS PARAGRAPHS
BAPTIST DEPRAVED
Dear Bro Rice — In your notice of my
answer to Bro E G Sewell in the last
issue of your paper Feb 21 you say that
in the main you indorse my views Your
only objection seems to be that I may ob-
ject to teaching the children in the assem-
blies of the church I do not I believe it
is the duty of parents to be diligent to
teach their children at home all through
the week and when the Lord’s day comes
round to go to the assembly and take their
children with them and see that they be-
have and to be attentive to what is there
taught so that they may learn as much as
they can— just as women should I don’t
think that either should be heard there I
don’t think that any sort of special teach-
ing should be clone for or to the women
or children I think it is the duty of the
male members to do the teaching in the as-
semblies of the church and they should be
careful to make their teaching as plain
as possible so that the unlearned even the
children can understand In'this way all
may be taught without confusion and with-
out doing any violence to the scriptures
This seems so plain to me that I never
thought of saying anything about it I
presume you will be satisified with this
If you think that there should be special
teaching for the children in the meetings
on Lord’s day then there is an issue be-
tween us and I call on you to show au-
thority for it in the scriptures and I will be
satisfied Your brother

I was not sure that I understood Bro
The Campbellites lay stress on the idea
of baptism as a condition of salvation and
thereby become the most dangerous here-
tics of the age To them the matter of sal-
vation is one of ritualism and form No
experience of grace no inward conscious-
ness of love to cheer them on the way It
is a dangerous faith— Landmark Baptist
The above is from a simon-pure Baptist
paper They may be depraved yes total-
ly depraved after all We have been try-
ing for years to convince them that they are
mistaken about it but the evidence is
growing stronger in their favor all the
time and we may as well acknowledge the
fact and make the best of it we can The
only question I raise now is Are all men
totally depraved? That is the point The
Baptists believe in total depravity and
think they have good evidence for their be-
lief There is no evidence in the Bible
that any one except the Baptists are total-
ly depraved and there may not be any that
they are But they must have some evi-
dence somewhere
Whatever may be said of the Baptists
being or not being totally depraved one
thing is true and that is that they are in-
fidels No man can deny that baptism is a
condition of salvation and not be an infidel
The New Testament says it is and they
say it is not therefore they are infidels at
that point Jesus said “Hethatbelieveth
and is baptized shall be saved” Mark
1 G : 1 G This is what the above writer calls
heresy Then Jesus was a heretic No
Jesus was not a heretic but the man that
In all probability I shall visit southern
Texas this summer and if churches in
that state want meetings they might write

We have received from Bro G D Smith
a 20-page tract the substance of a sermon
delivered on the opening of a new house of
worship at Weatherford Texas It is an
interesting pamphlet and sets forth some
of the differences between the church of
Christ and the denominations The price
of the tract is not given but I suppose it is
worth ten cents If you want the tract

VERY SUGGESTIVE
One cf the strongest arguments in favor
of a good Sunday school with good litera-
ture is seen in the oft-repeated examples
of the young church members voting the
elders out and the organ in— T B Wil-
kinson in Gospel Searchlight
Is there not as much Scripture for the
organ as for the Sunday school? Did you
ever know a church to let the organ in that
did not first let the Sunday school in? Did
you ever know young members to vote
the elders out and the organ in who did
not belong to the Sunday-school? Did
you not know that the church should be
its own Sunday-school and the good
literature it uses should be the Bible?
Well an editor should know these things
—Burnett’s Budget
Well my brother this is March the
the third month on another year and it
may be that you have not paid for the
Missionary for last year When our
readers can do that we expect it If they
can not we have no complaint to make
Hundreds owe not only for last year but
for the year before that Now brethren
we can not think for a moment that in all
that time you could not have paid some-
thing We are bound to collect a little
better Do you brethren who owe two
dollars and over want to scttlo with me?
I want to settle with you Wo aro breth-
ren But if you do not mako settlement
in some way soon the accounts will be
put out for collection This is as much
against my will perhaps as it is against
