GOSPEL MISSIONARY
PRAY ALWAYS
I have been asked by a brother to “give
a dissertation” on verse 17 of ii Thess 5th
chapter: “Pray without ceasing”
I learn from church history that an an
cient sect called Euchitae gathered from
this and similar passages that it was the
duty of Christians to pray “literally with-
out ceasing” making prayer-the whole
means of salvation and the whole business
of the Christian life And some objectors
— skeptics— tell me that this cannot be
done hence they don’t believe in the Christ
of the Bible
Now a slightacquaintance with the idiom
of the original languages of the scriptures
will enable us to correct these errors By
consulting a work on philological interpre-
tation I learn it is a rule or canon that “ad-
verbs of time expressing perpetuity some-
times denote only frequency or regularity
at stated times and seasons” This will
clearly appear from the following examples :
Ex 27:20 “To cause the lamp to burn al-
ways” (Hebrew tamid) This means
“from evening to morning” as appears
from the next verse: “Aaron and his sons
shall order it from evening to morning"
That the lamp of the tabernacle did not
burn during the day is evident from i Sam
3:3: “Ere the lamp of God weni out in
the temple of the Lord” Again Ex 28:
30 “And thou shalt put in the breastplate
of judgment and they shall be
upon Aaron’s heart when he goeth in be-
fore the Lord and Aaron shall bear the
judgment of the children of Isncl upon his
neart before the Lord continually” that is
whenever he went into the inner place of
the sanctuary as is clear from the pre-
ceding clause by which the word “contin-
ually” is to be limited Again: ii Sam
9:7 David says to another “Thou shalt
eat bread at my table continually” i e at
the stated hours of meals In like manner
“to pray without ceasing” is to pray con-
stantly morning and evening at the stated
hours of prayer In this precept the
apostle seems to have reference to Ex 29:
38'42: “Now this is that which you shall
oiler upon the altar: two lambs of the first
year day by day continually The one
lamb you shall offer in the morning and
the other lamb you shall offer in the even-
ing This shall be a continual burnt-offering
throughout your generations" At
these stated hours of sacrifice viz: at nine
o’clock in the morning and at three p m
the devout Jews used either to go up to
the temple to pray or to pray in their own
mouses Probably this is what Paul meant
or the Christian to do for the word here
sed adialeiptoes (without ceasing con-
iually) is applied to their praying stat-
s' morning and evening
ther texts will throw light on this one
l as David’s saying that he would
ell in the house of the Lord forever”
e wiuld “bless the Lord at all times”
he would “meditate in his law day
night” So Luke 2:37 it is said of
aa that “she departed not from the
ple but served Gcd with fasting and
yers night and day” by which is im-
iied not that she took up her permanent
abode at the temple which would be unal-
lowable but regularly restored thither at
stated times and was uncommonly assidu-
ous in her devotions Compare with this
Acts 26:7: “Unto which premise our
twelve tribes instantly serving God day
and night hope to come”
This is in accordance with our Savior's
direction Luke 18:1 “That men ought
always pray and not faint” I e that they
should continue in the regular discharge
of this duty every day at the appointed
times and that they should not desist
though their prayer should not be im-
mediately granted
According to the same usage from the
apostles going up to the temple at the
stated hours of prayer they are said to
have been “continually inthetemple bless-
ing and praising God”
To this circumstance of the temple-worship
there is no doubt a beautiful allusion
Rev 4:8: “They rest not day nor night
(or at the morning and evening sacrifices)
saying Holy holy holy Lord God Al-
mighty which was and is and is to come”
In the same sense Cornelius is said (Acts
10:2) to have “prayed to God always”
And through Christ we are said to “offer
unto God the sacrifice of praise continual-
ly" In the same sense we understand Paul
Rom 1:9: “For God is my witness that
without ceasing 1 make mention of you al-
ways in my prayers” And i Thess 1:23
“We give thanks to God always for you
all making mention of you in our prayers
remembering without ceasing your work
of faith” Also ii Tim 1:3: I thank God
whom I serve from my forefathers with
conscience that without ceasing I have
remembrance of thee in my prayers night
and day” See also Acts 2:42
This is the most liberal interpretation
that I can venture to give you with these
cases before me hence how few we find
observing the command “pray without
ceasing” night and morning There is
very little regular praying done so far as
my observation goes Why not reform on
this point! C D Moore

DEBATE
Dear Bro Rice:— I will now report our
debate held here February sixL The
discussion began prompt at 10 a m Bro
J II D Tomson affumed the propositions
but just being up from an attack of the
grip was not able physically to go ahead
so Bro G T Searcy of Coalgate I T
who was Bro Tomson’s moderator was
substituted to defend the truth So
after Carlen the M B champion had
asked Searcy if he was a representative
man and was indorsed by his brethren
and had a doctor’s certificate that Bro
Tomson was sick he decided to discuss
with Bro Searcy So Searcy pointed to
Penticost the day and 9 o’clock the hour
when the church of Christ was first
known Carlen first stated the M B
church was setup on the mountain then
said when pressed that it wasn’t then
but was on Pentecost Then he said
that Christ had not been crowned until
the destruction of Jerusalem Bro
Searcy told him there were now a band
of brethren meeting according to the
Testament plan worshiping on the first-
day of the week and asked Carlen if they
were these people He was dumb When
Searcy would crowd him on their doc-
trine Carlen would raise some objection
or would say that that’s too much— that
riles my Irish blood Carlen said to Bro
Searcy that if he wanted a fight he could
have it Serrcy said “I’m not mad”
and laughed at Carlen “but” says Searcy
“I am here to expose your doctrine”'
Bro Searcy said that the M B Philadel-
phia Confession of faith taught that infants
went to hell Carlen denied it and
said Bro Searcy perverted the reading
Then Searcy offered to let the president
moderator read it and if it did not read
that way he would give a libel but Car-
len didn’t have it read Things went
along until the fourth day when Carlen
opened by an hour speech in fore noon in
the affirmitive but when Bro Searcy
tramped on his heels afternoon showing
them up in their true light they became
very mad and threatened Searcy They
called for a marshal but Bru Foster our
Bro’s moderator informed them that
Searcy had the floor and also told them
they were there ready to defend the gos-
pel and if they could not to pack their
booksand go home and that is what Carlen
did So that ended the debate We
were well satisfied with Bro Searcy’s
labors as a debater He is a good speaker
and a ready thinker If you will you may
publish this We want all of our breth-
ren to know that we have acnieved a vic-
tory at Owasso over the Baptists The
world as far as I know say we had them
downed any how they flew the track ancl
went home Remember us in your prayers
is a request of a friend to the one faith

It is a mighty blessing to be believed in
but it is not much less a blessing implicity
to believe in another Indeed it is even
“more blessed to give than to receive” the
love of friendship— Selected
