In a recent issue of Bro Tom Barnett's g
paper the Budget ve find the following gg
note: gg
The Leader-Way is in the throes the of Xt
re-baptism controversy Bro Jas A Hard- tt
ing wrote an article on the subject and
about thirteen of the hobby scribes jumped
on him He needs “Uncle Tom” up there
to help him We can down a dozen of them
in two minutes Ask them where the
church was when Alex Campbell was
born? There are five journals in the refor-
mation that adhere loyally to the doctrine
of the pioneer fathers (on this and all oth- ft
er subjects) viz the Leader-Way Octo- ft
graphic Review Primitive Christian Gos- tt
pel Advocate and Burnett's Budget ft
I wonder what Bro Panniter the jeal- ft
ous man will say to that I do not see just ft
how ne can apply his "yes and no” dodge tt
on what Bro Burnett says Bro Burnett ft
like myself and many others understands ft
that he is an apologist for sect-baptism ft
He is mad at me and has been pouting a
year or two because I accused him of being
whero Bro Burnett places him in line
with the papers mentioned Not only so
but since I came to Oklahoma one of hi j
fast friends wrote an article in defense r
sect baptism and requested that if I pu
lished it and saw proper to reply that 1
reserved the right to substitute Bro P
miter in his placein the investiga‘’i I c
net publish the article but wrote him tt
I would gladly discuss the question wi f3®
his champion and pay two thirds the cos’
of putting it in tract form That ende
the matter so far as the discussion is con-’
cerned but it seems to have made Bro
Parmiter so jealous that he has not a good
word for me Too bad too bad ft

THE CONTRIBUTION
NO III
In my travels I have met a few brethren
who contend that laying by in store of
i Cor 16: 2 was for -a special purpose
intended only to supply the wants of the
poor saint$ at Jerusalem was to meet
that emergency Their idea seams to be
that the order given by Paul or rather
the Lord through Paul originated the
practice of laying by in store and when
the wants of the saints were supplied
the practice ceased or if not disciples
are under no obligation to contribute on
the first day of the week for any other
purpose except to supply the wants of
poor saints “An emergency” you say
Granted Yes and the Lord through
Paul told how to meet it How would
the Lord have all other emergencies met
please? Is apostolic example worth any-
thing? “For poor saints” did you say?
Granted Jesus said “For the poor ye
have always with you” Then the dis-
ciples should have always a plan to meet
their want3 If you are disposed to ig-
nore this example are you sure you know
of a better way than the Lord’s? “Origi-
nated the practice” Indeed There is not
the slightest probability that this as-
sumption is true When Paul gave this
order he said “On the first day of every
week let each of you lay somewhat by
itself according as he may have prosper-
ed putting it into the treasury” This
is the rendering found in the Living
Oracles confessedly more faithful to the
original than the common version The
order says “putting it into the treasury”
Could they put into the treasury if there
was none? No This order then implies
the existence yes the prior existence of
the church treasury Yes sir it is cer-
tain that the church at Corinth the
churches at Galatia and all others to
whom the above order was given had
their treasuries These treasuries we
know were to receive offerings And
since they were church treasuries the
members of the churches were to make
the offerings or do the contributing When
did they contribute or put in their offer-
ings prior to this order? There is but
one answr to this question That’s all
Again the church at Jerusalem and all
others planted by the apostles later
when set in order so that nothing was
wanting were all alike They all alike
had elders and deacons all alike had a
time and place of meeting all alike met
to break bread and engage in prayers etc
There is one good reason at least for this
The church at Jerusalem was not only
the first and mother but also the model
church Hence all others were like it
Since all those churches in Achaia Gal
atia and Macedonia had treasuries it
follows not only that the model church
did but that all others did also Who I
ask is so silly as to say that the churches
named above put into the treasury on the
first day of th week and that the members
of the mother model church did not?
None that silly because that would mane
these unlike the model and also question
the statement of Luke who said they con-
tinued steadfastly in the contribution
Here we rest until next week

SELFISHNESS
I shall devote this article in connection
with the two preceding on “Christian De-
portment” to the above heading One who
is absorbed in self or his own selfish in-
terests is selfish He has but little if any
consideration for the rights and good of
others Whatever may be to his interest
or the interest of his house is as far as he
goes and he can see no further How does
this compare with the “golden rule?” The
chief characteristics of the Christian is love
sympathy and anxiety for the good and the
comfort of others He remembers that he
should love others as he does himself— do
unto all men as he has opportunity But
the selfish man excuses himself and says I
must take care of me and mine and let oth-
ers do the same We have manyexamples
given in the scriptures ef such characters
and the fearful result We will look up a
few cases Read i Kings first and
second chapter the history of the fourth
son of David— Adonijah What an awful
result of selfishness— death On the other
hand see how his brother Solomon was
blessed He was free from all selfishness
hence the blessing he desired wisdom for
the good of others Next please read
i Kings 21st chapter of the case of Ahab
and his wife Jezebel with his selfishness
and his treachery in order to secure the
vineyard of Naboth See the result: The
dogs licked up his blood on the very spot
that they did the blood of Naboth whom
they put to death to get his vineyard
i Kings 22:38-40 Read also the fate of his
seventy sous (ii Kings 10:1-11) Now read
the fate of Jezebel (ii Kings 9:30-37) All
this the result of selfishness— self-aggran
dizement pride and vanity Another case
—the rebellion of Korah (Num 16:12-33)
The fearful end of all those cases given
was caused by love of self All these
things written aforetime are for the admo-
nition of all future ages For "whatsoever
things were written aforetime were writ-
ten for our learning that we through pa-
tience and comfort of the scriptures might
have hope” Rom 15:4 Begin at the
first verse and read to the end of the third
verse of this chapter This shows how
Christians should lay aside selfishness to
be a true follower of Christ Look at the
case of Ananias and Sapphira Selfish-
ness caused them to make a false statement
in regard to keeping back part of the price
of their land Death was the result (Acts
5) Selfishness leads to covetousness hy-
pocrisy and deceit It causes the widow
and orphan and other poor unfortunate
people to be neglected In fact we might
say it is the source of all crime cheating
lying and all character of swindling emi
nates from it All monopolies trusts and
combines are the result of selfishness
Christians should divest themselves all
they can of this fearful s i n and culti-
vate love striving to do toothers as they
would that others should do to them Al-
ways consider the rights of others Try
to do or say something good and kind to
all May the Lord help us to be Christ-
like in disposition and conduct
