Will the fifth time be the
charm? For the Lady Pirates
making a fifth consecutive
appearance in the state chain
pionships is nice, but it's not
their ultimate goal. They want
to win in their fifth try.
The Lady Pirates will play
Tulsa Seven foe Skiatook at 10
a.m. at Hall of Fame Stadium's
North Field
If they advance in the single
elimination format they will
play the winner of the Wag
oner/Ft. Gibson game on Satur-
day at 10 a.m. on the South
Field.
If they win that game, the
Ladies will play in the state
finals at 6 p.m. on the South
Field. Class 4A's state games
will be played on Friday and
Saturday.
The Ladies will get the
chance to compete for a title
because they won their region
3! tGi thdic in last Friday at
Edmond Deer Creek. The Lady
Pirates blew through the com
petition and set their sights on
a state title.
"After watching Weatherford
and Deer Creek play. we knew
we were the best team in the
regional, but at this level that
doesn't necessarily mean any-
thing,” said Head Coach Mil-
lard Clowers. "We still needed
to go out there and take care of
business. I was glad to see that
we did."
The Ladies won their first
game, against Weatherford, 5-0
as Kayla Lane recorded the
shutout. The win eliminated
Weatherford and set-up a show-
down between Mannford and
the host school.
Playing their second game of
the day was not an issue for the
Ladies as they stayed steady
behind the pitching of Kara
Wentworth and won their sec-
ond game 3-2. The game was not
as close as the score indicated.
Mannford pounded out 11 hits
in the game and left 12 runners
on base. The two Deer Creek
runs came late in the game on a
fielding error and a throwing
error. It was an important
moment for the Lady Pirates as
they were able to hang on to
win the game.
The two wins meant Mann-
ford and Deer Creek would
meet again Friday to deter-
mine the regional champion.
Deer Creek would have to beat
the Ladies tw ice to advance to
the state tournament. The west-
ern regional would soon have
an eastern team crowned
champion.
The Lady Pirates came out
Friday afternoon and made
sure everyone in attendance
knew who the best team was.
They pounded the ball, made
superior defensive plays and
basically dominated Deer
Creek in a 10-0 run rule win to
earn a fifth straight bid to the
Class 4A State Softball Champi-
onships.
"We were confident, we knew
what we had to do and we did
it,” Clowers said. “We weren't
sure where we would be going
for regionals, we figured it
would be west, but we had to be
ready for whoever they put in
front of us.”
Being the westernmost team
ranked in the top five it was
assumed the Lady Pirates
would travel west, but Clowers
thought they would be sent to
Tecumseh. Instead Glenpool

Kara Wentworth, Lindsay
Gottschalk. Angela Pantelogia-
nis and Josie Brasier were
freshman when the Lady
Pirates made it to the champi-
onship game four years ago
The dream of making it to the
championship game again has
never left the quartet.
"I realized today how bad
Amanda Evans wanted to touch
the glory of being state
champs,” said Lady Pirates
third baseman Angela Pantelo-
gianis. "Amanda was positive
going into state four years ago
as a senior and I want to be pos-
itive as well going into state.”
For Kara Wentworth going
into the state tournament with
not only her team-mates but
friends will keep her calm
“I feel privilege going to state
with teammates who not only-
are we close on the field, but
we are close off the field as
well," Wentworth said
“I’m most confident in this
team winning the state champi
onship than before because we
are so close," said Josie Brasi-
er.
“I believe we have the ability
to grab the title this year than
before due to the experience
we have on the team." said
Lindsay Gottschalk.
"This is an honor going to
state with members of this
team who have went for four
years together." said Senior
Catcher Jenni Hagood "This is
my second year to go with them
and I know I will be more
focused than I was last year."
Before the quintet and their
team=mates made it to the
golden circle of softball, they
had to knock off Weatherford
and Deer Creek
“I thought we would win it
today in one game," said
Hagood. “I know as a team we
have worked hard and I felt
like everyone was getting
pumped up.”
“I thought we started out a lit-
tle nervous, but after the first
inning I knew we would take
it," said Gottschalk.
“I wanted to win it so bad
today, I knew that we had to hit
the ball and get key hits to
score runs and have no errors
in order for us to win," said
Pantelogianis.
"I was nervous going into the
game, but after the first inning
I knew we had it in the bag."
said Wentworth
“I felt like we weren’t going to
win today, I felt like no-one get-
ting pumped up. but we stuck it
out and fought back and won
the game, said Brasier.
The quintet will don their
Lady Pirate uniforms on Fri-
day. tighten the laces on the
cleats, put the game face on
and prepare for battle as they
begin their romp to the winner
