We would like to thank
the members of the Man-
nford Fire Department
as well as the surround
ing fire departments for
their efforts in controlling
recent grass fires in our
area. The efforts of these
people go largely unno
ticed and under appreci-
ated until we are directly
involved.
(Several weeks) ago a
fire, north of Mannford,
threatened our home and
would have destroyed our
storage buildings without
their help. Also, (recently)
a fire west of Mannford
burned several acres of
pasture land and would
have burned our hay barn
without the efforts of
these fire departments
as well as the efforts
of several friends and
neighbors.
These individuals spend
many hours of their own
time attending meetings
and classes to keep their
skills updated. We have
been told that the Mann
ford Fire Department has
the lowest fire rating of
any volunteer fire depart
ment in the state. This
should give us peace of
mind in knowing they are
trained to respond to our
needs as well as provid
mg is with lower insur-
ance rates.

Little league sports
have changed a little bit
since I played.
When I was a kid, play-
ing soccer, baseball or
basketball, my teams
would usually get beat.
We didn’t just lose,
we made losing an art
form — 10-0, 30-2, 50-7.
Scores like that weren’t
unheard of, but now
little leagues don’t keep
score.
What?
When I started coach-
ing my daughter in soc-
cer. I taught the girls
how to play the game
and how to win at age 6.
The game is about fun,
and winning is fun.
During her under-6
season (she’s now 13),
we played our first game
and beat the other team
12-0. After it was over,
the referee explained to
me that the game was a
0-0 tie. I said, “No way,
we creamed those girls!
Look, one of them is
wearing a tutu and her
dance shoes.”
He said, “We don't
keep score at this level.
Everyone wins."
I said, “What about
the team that scored 12
goals? They won. They
team that didn’t score
any goals lost."
It's simple math and 6

do.
When kids work hard
and achieve a goal, they
are told that their oppo-
nents who didn't try are
just as good and every-
thing they worked for is
for nothing.
When I was a kid. my
teams weren't good
and I probably received
three medals or tro-
phies.
Now, I need a trophy
room for my two kids'
year olds know how to
count.
So, I gathered my girls
in a circle and we start-
ed chanting and danc-
ing in celebration of our
win.
Then we got light-
er fluid and a match
and burned the score
12-0 into the field so it
would be there for eter-
nity, and the other team
could see it the rext
time they stepped onto
the field.
Then we dressed up
like a mariachi band
and danced around the
other team, shaking ma-
racas while shouting
the score in Spanish.
"Doce a cero! Doce a
cero! Doce a cero!"
My goalkeeper then
went up to an oppos-
ing player’s parents and
asked, “Are you and
your wife first cousins,
and are you the off-
spring of cousins that
also didn't know how to
play soccer?”
At our next practice,
my team wrote the
score (l2-0) down on a
piece of paper and put
it in a time capsule. In
20 years we are going
to open it and mail the
score to the players
to remind them of the
beating they received
Okay, we didn’t do all
of that, but I wanted to.
This country is dumb-
ing down everything we
