Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)isa condition in which there are
persistent and recurring impulses or an unreasonable need to behave in a
certain way. Approximately 5 million Americans suffer from OCD at
some time in their lives. They often have thoughts or ideas that lodge in the
mind that cannot be forgotten. Many such thoughts center on irrational
fears. Non-drug therapies for OCD include psychotherapy, psycho-
surgery, behavioral therapy, and electroconvulsive therapy. The Obses-
sive Compulsion Foundation reports that medicine combined with behav-
ioral therapy “is moderately effective in 60% to 80% of all cases.”

In February the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved
fluoxetine (Prozac) for the management of this health problem. The only
other medicine approved for the treatment of OCD is clomipramine
(Anafranil). a tricyclic antidepressant. According to a weekly publication
called the Pink Sheet, FDA approval of fluoxetine was conditional. The
manufacturer agreed to conduct relapse prevention studies and studies
regarding use of the medicine for OCD in children and teenagers. The
manufacturer also agreed to enhance documentation submitted to the FDA
related to adverse drug effects.
