She added the widened road will
benefit both the Turner and the
Cimarron turnpikes by providing
easy access to both routes for area
motorists.
Sand Springs City Manager Loy
Calhoun also favored the project as
a “boost to the economic outlooks
for both communities.”
It will also continue to draw both
cities closer together, he added.
Sand Springs and Sapulpa currently
have a joint operating agreement to
“These projected volumes greatly
exceed the carrying capacity of a
two-lane roadway,” Gifford said.
“Four lanes will safely and
adequately carry the number of
vehicles traveling SH 97 now and in
the year 2009.’’

Widening would basically consist
of adding two northbound lanes east
of the existing highway for the 4.7
mile stretch between 51st Street and
SH 166. Since ODOT acquired
adequate right-of-ways for four
lanes when the original highway was
built in the 1970s, few acquisitions
will need to be made.
The existing county road (old SH
97) would remain intact except for a
short stretch near 86th Street.
From SH 166 to the Burlington
Northern railroad tracks in Sapulpa,
the roadway will add a fifth lane for
lual left turns. A new bridge will be
ouilt over the Turner Turnpike

Interstate 44).
The two block segment between
Jie railroad tracks and Dewey
Avenue would receive some curb
modifications.
John Worman project engineer
with F-H-C Inc., noted the urban
section of the roadway south of SH
166 will include curbing and storm
drains. The northern section to Sand
Springs will include adequate bar
ditches to control water runoff.
Sapulpan Charles Lake urged
engineers to install safety equip-
ment, possibly even an overhead
crosswalk, near Garfield
Elementary. Otherwise, he said, the
project seemed to be “extremely
well thought out.”
Sapulpa Police questioned what
would happen to the Leon Bench
memorial, located on the east side of
SH 97 south of 91st Street. Bench, an
Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper,
was shot and killed there on October
2, 1983.
