JANUARY, 1994

and I can assure you in that period of time our
retirees cost of living has increased and has
resulted in less pay for each of them. We have
seen increases in all health care related areas
and not knowing how each person will be
effected under President Clinton's proposed
health care plan leaves us unsure of future
health care cost increases. In each of the last
four years most of our retirees have had in-
creases in health care and tax burdens.
HB 1840, authored by Representative Kirby of
Lawton, would eliminate the $5,500 income
tax exemption for retired federal, state, fire
and police again effectively taking away an-
other retiree benefit. Okay, enough is enough!
We must stand up and be heard. Contact your
Senator and Representative to oppose this
legislation. The Oklahoma State Firefighters
Association works diligently in securing ben-
efits and we must oppose any entity wishing
to take benefits away from our system. The
OSFA has asked for a bill to be introduced that
will give the retirees a raise this next session.
Pete Stavros will be seeking an increase of at
least 10% and hopefully increases in a more
regular time frame will be seen in the future.
We can make this happen, but we must work
together for our own future. Yours in the fire
service. ♦
