FROM OKLAHOMA STAFF COUNCIL OF DEFENSE
OKLAHOMA IX MIDST OF DRIVE FOR LOAN'
OKLAHOMA CITY Oct 17 — The campaign for the sale of tho second
Issue of the Liberty Loan of 1917 is going full blast in every county in
Oklahoma with hundreds of patriots through the Liberty Loan organiza-
tion itself through county councils of defense through lodges clubs and
churches working to place a bond in every home
Wednesday Oct 17 marks the beginning of the last ten days of work
and it 1b expected that by far the greater part of the bonds will be placed
during these last ten days Organized campaigns are to give every man
and every woman in Oklahoma an opportunity to do his ami her part In sup-
porting the boys who are going to the trenches to substitute the loan of
money for the lives and suffering of men
"Oklahoma citizens MUST take their full quota of this Issue of bonds”
begins the appeal sent out today to citizens from the Oklahoma State Coun-
cil of Defense
The Liberty Loan offors citizens a profitable form of Investment the
security is the government and the citizenship of the nation itself And
more than that It offers citizens an opportunity to get behind the lads in
the trenches Failure of America to take this issue of bonds would doubt-
loss mean the prolonging of the war It would mean giving comfort to the
enemy It would mean that American citizens preferred to see more of
their boys killed rather than to Invest some of their money in the bonds of
tlielr country
“This state has been classed In the minds of many as a ‘slacker state’
Statements made by those elected to represent the people have left tills
Impression Highly colored stories of the so-called draft riots were circu-
lated throughout the east where thousands believe Oklahoma citizens are
withholding tlielr support from the government If Oklahoma takes Its
share of Liberty Bonds by Oct 27 news will prove to the world that this
state is behind the American flag
"We expect the soldier lads to do their part It would be but right
that we hold them In contempt if when the call comes to charge they
should lay down tlielr guns and retreat
“The call has come to citlzeiiB of Okluhoma to 'charge' The 'charge'
is to bo in the form of the purchase of Liberty Bonds If citizens of this
stute refuse to obey the command they place themselves in the clasB with
those divisions of Russian soldiers who rntlicr than face the enemy threw
down their guns and retreated In disgrace
Telegraphic reports of the number of bonds sold In each county are to
he received by the Oklahoma State Council of Defense ut the beginning of
tho last ten days' campaign and dally from Oct 23
FOOD CAMPAIGN' POSTPONED
Due to the supreme Importance of American citizens giving their en-
tire energy to the campaign for sale of Liberty bonds the opening of the
food pledge campaign lias been postponed from Oct 21 to Oct 28 The
same organization that was to have pushed the signing of food cards will
work first for the sale of bonds
DEFENSE COUNCIL MAKES REPORT
A complete report from the Oklahoma State Council of Defense to coun-
ty councils has been sent out this week The report gives a complete ac-
count of the activities of the war organization during the past five months
together with plans for future work A limited number of copies will be
sent out to those asking forthem
HOUSEWIVES’ SCRAPBOOK
The federal food administration has published hundreds of excellent re-
ceipts by tho use of which housewives can prepare food more economically
and with the use of less of the foodstuffs Americans are asked by the
government to save The Oklahoma food administrator has suggested that
women clip these from newspapers and preserve them in scrap books for
futuro use
EIGHTEEN NATIONS FIGHT HUN

the Prussian militury machine together with the idea of ruthleBS conquest

ama Slam Liberia China and the United States
FOOD MILL AVIX TIIE AVAR
Some of the greatest critics of Europe have contended for two years that
famine not fighting will decide the war Herbert Hoover commander-in-clik-f
of America's food army has issued the following Instructions to his
soldiers:
Buy less cook no more than necessary serve smaller portions
Use local and seasonable supplies
Patronize local produccis and lessen the need and the cost of trans-
portation Preach and practice the “Gospel of the Clean Plate”
Don't starve yourself of course And don't limit the plain food of
glowing children
Watch out for waste In your community Don't eat between meals
EAT PLENTY BUT AV1SELY AND WITHOUT WASTE
