jysCEIPTS and conditions of the hog
trade this week were such that the
talent could find no complaint Of
course it was to have been expected
that the local market would get fairly
good runs by reason of 'the substan-
tial evidence that the packers are here
to establish the market on a depend-
able and reliable basis This outlet
together with the demand from other
local sources which while smaller
buyers nevertheless are in the compe-
tition has placed the local market in
a way to take care ot good runs each
day The total receipts for the week
reached around 8300 head and sell-
ers could not object to the trade
as compared with other market
points The market opeifed Monday
with 1600 on offer an $890 top with
the bulk ot packers' grades selling
from $866 880 Tuesday the run to-
taled the same and the market ruling
weaker tops reached $880 with the
bulk landing from $860875 The
middle day of the week showed the
rather good run of 2300 head and
prices were higher the top for that

NEW TAX LAW
IS EFFECTIVE!
GUTHRIE Okla Oct’’ 15— Governor
Haskell’s rullroad gross Income tax
bill becomes effective’ today Under
the bill the State board of equaliza-
tion meets today to consider the in-
come reports of the various railroads'
which are required to have been filed
with the state auditor on or before
today ' '
At noon yesterday only ‘ the Rock
Island and Missouri Kansas & Texas
had filed the required statement
The railroad taa bill originated with
Governor Haskell and was one of the
chief measures passed by the 1910
legislature It exempts railroads from
ad valorem taxation afid taxes them
according to their gross Incomes The
rates of taxation scales according to
the percentage of expenses to income
each rond being placed by this per-
centage in one of eight classes The
road enjoying the lowest percentage
ot operating expenses or highest per-
centage ot gross profits Is taxed a
higher per cent than a poorly paying
road
Prom the reports of the Katy and
Rock Island filed yesterday it would
appear that the taxes under the new
lnw will be much greater than under
the ad valorem system The Katy re-
ports a total gross Income from Its
entire system of 3072 miles of mala
track for the fiscal year ending June
30 1910 of $26559346 operating ex-
penses $19186049 average income
per mile $8G4562 average operating
expenses per mile $624546 The main
track mileage of Okluhoma Is 67561
The percentage of operating expenses
to gross Income was 7224 per centum
which places the Katy In class "D”
with a Btate tax rate of 019375 per
dollar of gross Income In Oklahoma
and a county and municipal tax rate
of 00425 for each mill of local taxeB
By multiplying the Oklahoma mileage
by the averuge Income per mile a to-
tal gross income for Oklahoma of $6-
34106733 is obtained which at the
''!)" rate would make the Katy liable
for $113170 state taxeB alone The
rliiie ad valorem levy this year Is 1
mill and the Katy’s ad valorem value
this year is $28152546 which on an
ad valorem basis would make the
road liable for $28152 in state taxes
whereas the new law would make the
state tax $113170
The Rock Island report filed with
'lie auditor Is as follows: Entire sys-
tem of 740033 miles gross Income
$07172560 totnl operating expenses
63175695 average g-oss lneome per
ml'e $907(160 average operating ex-
pense per mile $718558 percentage
of operating expenses to gross Income
7916 mileage In Oklnhoma 132206
Tho gross income of the Rock Island
In Oklahoma Is then shown to have
been $1199939740 The state rate is
01875 the Rock Island going Into
class “E" which would make its state
taxes $22498870 On the ad valorm
valuation of $47680852 the Rock Ts-
Vnd’s state tax on an ad valorem
basis would be $47680
It Is by no means certain that the
railroads will accppt the new law The
Rook Island specifically declares that
Its report Is not to be taken as an
admission that the new law has any
'cgal effect
The fact that other roads
have not reported is taken as overt
opposition to the new law In fact
the state board of equalization was bo
uncertain last summer both as to the
constitutionality of the new law and
of what tho railroads would do that
railroad property was assessed ad
valorem just ns usual though the new
gross Income tnx was supposed to su-
percede the ad valorem assessments
and taxes

Bobs” (G Wj Chandler head hog
buyer for Morris & Co with head-

from Thomas where he left the live
stock demonstration train being run
this week over the Frisco Mr Chan-
dler states that the train was 'met at
different points by goodly numbers of
farmers and stock growers who mani-
fested a great deal of Interest In the
movement to encourage greater pro-
duetton of hogs and also the better
breeding of the porker (
“The farmers at the points we visit-
ed were thoroughly aroused to the im-
portance of the subject and I believe
that much substantial benefit will be
the result’’ said Mr Chandler to a
representative of THE NEWS this aft-
ernoon He continued : "I find that the farm-
ers and stock growers up In that sec-
tion of the country are about as live
as you will find them anywhere and
there is no doubt but that they are
going to get busy and get Into the
hog and cattle production on a larger
scale They are men of good intelli-
gence are up-to-date In farming and
they are ready to take hold where
the Inducement Is offered them and
the location of the packing plants here
Is sufficient for them to give the Jarger
raising of hogs their Immediate atten-
tion It muBt be remembered that
within a few months that a good
weight hog can be finished and brought
to market and bring good prices and
the farmer knows that everything he
raises in the live stock line is ready
money and you can take my word for
It that they are going to get busy and
WASHINGTON 'bet 16— In a nar-
row street upon a precisely selected
spot after an aerial flight of more
than six miles across the city Claude
Grahams White the English aviator
dropped his aeroplane at the side door
of the White House
On the way thither at a height of
nearly 500 feet he circled the dome
of the capltol and passed the lofty

apex He landed where the slightest
deviation from his course would have
Impaled him upon the spikes of the
Iron fence around the White House

spot to offer congratulations Other
officials of the army and navy Includ-

SOUTHWEST RATE
SUrriS ARGUED
conrt here yeeterday The case Is be-
whose recommendations upheld two
years ago the orders of the Interstate
commerce commission and which are
now In effect
Arguments for the railroads were
presented by J W Terry of Galveston
Tex and for the commission by S H
Cowan of Fort Worth Tex
Mr Terry argued that the cattle
tralfic does not pay the railroads so
much profit In proportion to the quan-
I 5q tlty of freight carried as most other
kinds of traffic He maintained that
the rates established by the commis-
sion are unreasonable and do not give
the railroads fair compensation for
handling that traffic
Mr Cowan for the commission
maintained that the rates established
by the commission were reasonable
and compensatory and that the former
rates reduced by the commission were
unreasonably high
Judges Sanhorn Vandewater and
Adums are trying the cases
