Was the Lowest for Any Monthly Per-
iod on Record According to Fire
Marshal Hammond
While the total fire waste for the
state during the month of April was
$18869187 the normal waste was the
lowest for any month since the crea-
tion of the fire marshal’s office as
was shown by the monthly report of
State Fire Marshal C C Hammonds
transmitted to Insurance Commission-
er Perry A Ballard
The normal waste during that time
ws $9699187 and the balance $91-
700 represents the loss by oil fires
caused by lightning This is the
heaviest loss from this cause yet re-
corded by the fire marshal The total
loss on all buildings and contents oc-
casioned by lightning during the
month was $94f00 including the oil
loss noted above Following those
caused by lightning fire of unknown
origin were the most destructive dur-
ing the month occasioning damage ag-
gregating $38990 Incendiary fires de-
stroyed property valued at $21850
During April the department inves-
tigated twenty fires of suspicious or-
igin One person was arrested on a
charge of arson and one was convict-
ed and sent to the penitentiary for
five years for this crime
Fire Marshal Hammonds reports
that a number of cities are- contem-
plating the passage of an oidinanee
creating a city fire marshal and this
the report states “will reduce the fire
hazards In the cities that adopt it”
Warrants Ordered Paid
Warrants in the total sum of $250-
000 representing the full amount of
the capitol building and northwest
railroad bond issue of last February
have been ordered drawn by the city
commissoners in favor of the Capi-
tol Building and the Fackingtown De-
velopment company The Capitol
Building company rereivves $100000
which will immediately be made
available for the erection of a state
capitol in the northwest part of the
city while the Packingtown Develop-
ment company receives $150000
which will be turned over to Edward
H Cooke and Frank J Wikoff in
trust for the Northwest Railroad com-
pany to be payable when actual con-
struction of that proposed line begins
Much Interest In Road Movement
Much interest is being manifested
throughout the state in the road dis-
trict improvement law according to
reports received at the state highway
department where many inquiries are
being made The present' law was
passed at the last session of the leg-
islature and provides for creating a
district for road building purposes
with authority to issue bonds for the
construction of roads the district to
be any portion of a county not less
than eighteen square miles in extent

At the meeting'of the state board of
agriculture a proclamation was issued
in line with a recent order of the fed-
eral department placing more than
three hundred and fifty thousand
acres in Oklahoma above the federal
quarantine line The section affected
includes two townships in Comanche
county seven townships in Pottawa-
tomie county all of Grady county west
and north of the Frisco railroad and
a small portion of Lincoln county

20 PER CENT GREATER
Monthly Report Shows 'Growing Con-
dition of Crops to Be 'the Best
Ever Recorded at This
Season
As shown by 242 reports from ever
part of the state received and tabu-
lated by the state board of agricul-
ture the growing condition of wheat
oats and alfalfa was never 'better at
this time of year and the banner crop
of these three staples is indicated
The report covers the condition of the
crops to April 23 when for the entire
state the growing condition of wheat
was 846 of oats 882 and of alfalfa
921
Prospects for an enormous yield ot
alfalfa are especially promising Not
only is the growing crop in fine shape
but a total of 26133 acres has beet)
planted to alfalfa almost 20 per cent
more than was planted in 1911 In
fact there is an encouraging increase
in the total acreage under cultivation
this year the figures for the state be-
ing 1065 as compared with 100 in
1911 There is a slight falling off in
the acreage devoted to Irish potatoes
but early indications are that the yield
will be heavy
Sand Hearing Continued
The hearing of protests by sand
companies engaged in removing sand
and gravel from the beds of the Ar-
kansas and Grand rivers against the
blanket lease granted by the com-
missioners or the state land office
for the same privilege to the Builders'
Sand and Gravel company was de-
ferred for two weeks by the commis-
sioners on request of the sand men
none of whom were able to appear
The board went over the record of
past meetings to determine whether
the sand and gravel privilege had ever
been advertised and on the records
of the meeting of December 21 a mo
tion to the effect that an advetisement
be inserted it was discovered had
been made by R H Wilson
Withdraws His Resignation
The resignation of President J
Alexander Moore of the state girls’
college at Chlckasha tendered to th
6tate board of education to take effect
July 1 has been withdrawn Th
withdrawal was made on account oi
a recent ruling by the attorney genera
that the board has authority to dis-
charge Moore if it sees fit Members
of the board would not state what
their probable action would be In the

Complete pardon has been granted
by Governor Cruce to Herbert Sing-
