I used to erings and cower at tha win-
dow of tha teller
And wish tha floor would open and would
drop me to the cellar
f handed him my money and I thanked
him for hta kindness
Ha looked at ma as blankly as thouffb
struck by audden blindness
t
But now I set tha ear
Of tha genial cashier
And a nod and smile la coming from tha
stately president
While tha teller speaks my name
As though I were known to fame
And In bows of cordial welcome all tha
once stiff spines are bent
I used to creep In softly to deposit fif-
ty doUarap
And hope tney'wouMn’t notice X was
wearing pap4r dollars
The teller took money— and I knew
ha did a faVar ’ '
And I shuffled out as bujnbly aa tha rud-
est mis beh aver j
S
But now they bow and smile
Aa they count my ‘little pile "
And they murmur that I’m helping to
rejuvenate tha land
And tha stately president
With respect and gladness blent
Asks about my wife- and children while
ha shakss ma by tha hand
I used to ftar tha teller and his big and
heavy glasses
Through which ha stared a stare as cold
as anow-fllled mountain passes
But now he make ma Unger and narrate
tha latest story
And ha tells ma that T represent tha &a
tlon'a pride and glory
O now X have tha ear
Of tha smtllng-faced cashier
And by fingers know tha gripping of
tha stately president
While the teller bows to ma
Just a a plea aa nice can be
As ha counte each dime and dollar and
each nickel and each cent
