SPRING TONICS
By William J. Sebolee
We are approaching the season
when many feel the effects of the
giefit annual epidemic of physical
and mental languor commonly
known aa spring fever.
Whether this feeling of lassitude
is a natural phenomenon of spring
or whether ti represents the aeeu-
multed effects of somewhat unhy-
gienic living is difficult to aay. It
Is more likely to be the latter.
Winter is the season ' during
which we spend much time indoor.
We are usually not exposed to an
over-abundance of flesh air. And
we get about aa little outdoor ex-
ercise aa at any time during the

see yon out there about some evi-
dence. An old case. Will yju come
with us now and quietly please."
In that square entrance nail after
they had dosed the tell glass doors
Jocelyn saw him standing among
them turn back as though against
his will to look at her. She remem-
bered another outline noble
patient proud.
Thi outline ot tier bridegroom baa
no such quality. Its narrow knave face
ua Uirunkrii with pale hatred with
frustrated pasiur. with kt vengeance.
To escape that lat terrible luuk the
girl fell down bcio.'c Nick Saroal and
lid her face.
He put his arms about her eager-
ly. And Felix with the men went
out.
A strange day. A strange sad
evening. Marcella had gone iuto the
anctmry distracted by her mem-
ories; she come out quite serene a
child whose memory is only of to-
day and yesterday. She thought that
Nick Sandal was her indulgent unde
and Jocelyn a friend to love.
They sent for a psychiatrist who
promptly ordered her taken to a
sanitarium.
She hardly knew that Dr. -Bond
had Idt until Nick spoke to her:
Come over here Lynda. Are you
too tired?"
He was seated on the small bro-
caded sofa curled up there painfully
as she had seen him on the sofa in
his shabby room.
"Im not tired. Im afraid."
"Afnid? He winced his swollen
fingers paused in their task of filling
his pipe "Of me dear?"
"Of what you are going to tell
me Nick."
"Youd rather Id he quiet? Let
it all go? Youd rather never know
the truth?" .
"Id rather ... but of course I
must listen. Its too late now. Ill
listen Nick Only do you love me?-
To my regret. Ita because I was
fed enough to let you trick me with
those confounded eyes and ways of
yours those darling eyes and ways
yes trick me into loving you that
Ive done what I have done . . .
and been the blasted fed I have
been lately."
Lately?"
"You think its not such a recent
development? Well it has been.
Jock's been living lately with
sort of maniac I've been . . . jealous.
Ive wanted you to myself. It was
you I was trying to steal when I
came in here oh that wet night and
took the jewels. There now. Go
back to your seat Ive got a pen-
ance to go through with now
Lynda."
"I met your mother in a Cali-
fornia cafe. San Francisco. She was
making the American grand tour.
She mt separated from her party
lost her chaperon. A man insulted
her. I knocked him down. She lrt
me take her back to her hotel!
Thats the way it began. In those
days I wu a mining engineer. I
f ambled a little on the side when
felt the luck in my fingers. I went
to New York and got myself intro-
duced to the Harlowe crowd. Sus-
picious of me from the start To
them I smelled like a rank' outsider.
year. The person in ordinary good
health however suffers no loss of
appetite. The usual tendency is to
eat too much for the amount of ex-
ercise that is being taken.
8o it Is not at all surprising that
living in this way for three or four
months is likely to make one feel a
little sluggish about tbe time that
spring begins.
Old Methods Passe.
The old way of attempting to
cure this vague ailment was to con-
sume one or more bottle of aome
so-called blood-purifier or spring
.tonic. And perhaps a spring tonic
la in order. But this is usually not
one of the kind to be taken out of
a bottle or in the form of pills.
Of course those who have defi-
nite physical ailments may require
some medlcint; in the course of
treatment. Such people have more
wrong with them than a simple at-
tack of spring lassitude.

however the best tonics are suit-
able exercise fresh air and care
to avoid overeating. When passible
the exercise should be taken hi the
open air. This insures a plentiful
supply of fresh air at the very time
when the system has the most use
for it.
A short vacation spent largely
in outdoor exercise of some kind
would no doubt be an ideal tonic.
But- aa this to not always possible
a moderate daily dose of some form
ot exercise in the open air is the
next best thing in the way of a
spring tonic.

Here Is a new way to arrange a
scarf and it is such a simple trick
that we wonder why no one ever
thought of it before. It has appeared
on a number of new dresses and is
likely to appear on a good many
more before many weeks have pass-
ed. But It Is not necessary for you
to buy a dress with this scarf ar-
rangement when it is such a simple
thing tq add a scarf in this way to
a dress that you already possess
and that stands In need of a new
touch' of trimming.
The scarf does not have to be-
come a permanent part of the dress
either because it is attached merely
by means of buttonholes in the
scarf and buttons on the dress.
You will need a piece of silk
about a yard and a half long and
nine inches wide to make Die scarf
but you may piece it in the center
if you do not want to buy a piece
as long aa this. Simply make a
narrow machine stitched hem along
the sides and one end of the scarf
or finish with a hand rolled hem.
Finish the unhemmed end with a
facing an Inch or more In width
so as to provide a substantial place
for your buttons. And then along
the side of the dress where the scarf
is attached make the necessary nun
be of buttonholes.
