it opeus up a new and power j
erful traus-continel line to the
Pacific coast. Not only does
the Rock Island extension to
El Paso secure lor that road
the "Short Line Route" be-
tween the east and the south
and southwest, but also^ the
"Low Altitude Route," as
the country through which it
passes is of extremely low al-
titude and the maximum
grade ol the road is less than
one per cent.
Construction of this ex-
tension has been carried on in
the latest and most practical
manner. Improved and pow-
erful machinery, both road-
way construction and track-
laying, has been employed
and the completion of the
work commenced nly a short
time ago, has l>een perfected
in the shortest time consist-
ent with safety. 1 he track
is laid with 80-pouud steel
rails and stone and steel
bridges have been constructed
in place of the much used
woodeu structures. The line
is built strong and substan-
tial, that it will be a monu-
ment to good railroad con-
struction as well as being ca-
pable to withstand the wear
and tear iucidetit to the heavy
traffic which will necessarily
accrue to this "Short Line
Route."
With the inauguration of
train service between Kansas
City aud El Paso, the usual
first-class equipment of the
Rock Island will be installed.
An entirely new supply of
chair eras, day coaches and
Pullman sleepers has beeu or-
dered for this line aud will be
strictly up-to-date in every
particular. Late appliances
for safety and convenience
will lie used. The Pullman
sleepers will l>e marvels of
beauty. The entire train will
!>e full vestibuled. Dining
cars will be part of the equip-
ment of the trains and meals
served "a la carte," patrons
paying for only what they
order.
The new line to El Paso is
an extension of the Liberal
branch ol the Rock Island
and runs in an almost straight
line from Liberal in south-
west corner of Kansas to El j
Paso, Texas, through White
Oaks country. The scenery
along the route is beautiful!
and the resources of thecoun-t

passes are .'ill that could be i
