TREES VS WEEPS
It is reported that in some
of the western and southwest-
ern counties of Oklahoma the
Russian thistles are drifted as
high as the wire fences which
in most cases are the only
check to their advance Where
do they stop when wire fences
are lacking? It is said that
this weed started in North Da-
kota In Germany it was
the “wind witch” and in Russia
“leap-over-the field”
A writer in Iowa Bulletin
No 25 says that in Russia
east of the Volga river the
native home of the thistle tne
colonists at an early day sur-
rounded their possession on all
sides by wide belts of timber
The main purpose was to fur
nish protection against desprt
winds but incidentally the
trees have prevented the in-
road of the “leap-the-field” as
they lodge in the groves where
the seed rarelv germinates and
when it does it fails to attain
seeding stage” It is further
stated that over the carefullv
‘ cultivated acres of the colony
a fullgrown Russian thistle
could not be found even in of or the same
mid-September and the colon-
ists stated that it was one of
the easiest of annuals to sub-
due cut off t the surface of
the ground it did not snrout "
from the stub The belief there
prevailed that it was a compar-
atively harmless annual as
there managed where thev had
pine troves and sugar fields

as shelter from the winds: we
