Wanted To See An American
On last Saturday a gentleman
whohn we had never seen stepped
into into our sanctum and inquir-
ed for the editor The gentle-
man in question was Mr L C
Eickhoff a resident of Waukomis
Mr Eickhoff is of German extrac-
tion but above all he is an Amer-
ican He said that he was grati-
fied to meet such an American
citizen as the editor of the Chief-
tain He said to us “It takes
courage to write and speak as
you do and L admire you for it
Mr Eickhoff came qver in his
auto and brought his daughter
with him to take train for Alva
where she is attending the North-
western State Normal We were
very glad to have him call and
form his acquaintance He has
been reading the Chieftain for
the' past year and a half and he
likes it so well that he paid us a
dollar to keep it coming '

Our attendance at the great
Republican convention and Fair
banka meeting at Oklahoma City
the first of the week and our 16th
celebration which occupied four
days took up our whole time and
the paper of course was almost
entirely neglected In the next
issue we will give" a writeup of
the celebration and mention old
friends who frere in attendance
The County Fair was very good
and well attended Next year
we hope to see it even better
' Help Wanted
Mr John W Bishop Editor:
I am sorry to bother you but the
lady of “thirty summers” has
been' bringing her complaints to
me and I have decided to ask
your assistance She says that
since the publication about the
birthday surprise came out in
the Chieftain the 'people seem to
doubt the sincerity of her age
She says “Why people 'would
come to me boldly and ask how
old Lillian was others would ask
how long I had been married
and others how long I had lived
in Cleo ” But she had just laugh-
ed about it all and thought it real
fun She was horrified a few
days ago however when a prom-
inent business man of Cleo made
the remark in a public place be-
fore a number of people that he
had kept company with one of
her daughters thirty years ago
And this very gentleman is con-
sidered one of Cleo’s young men
Why he must be 50 but we take
it for granted he must have spoke
hastily not thinking of himself
and if we were to ask him how
old he was he would answer 26
But that isn't the idea ’T'was
the lady’s wellfare we were con-
sidering and she has admitted
that she doesn’t really care what
the people -of Cleo really' think
about her age but— well she
didn’t say it in so many words
but I have been in her company
so much it isn’t always necessary
to speak out loud But you un-
derstand a fine looking gentle-
man from Aline is still making
calls in Cleo What if some 'of
this gossip would reach his ears?
We are not saying it would but
it might have something to do
with the future destiny of Lady
Herald And if it should just
think of that wedding feast we
would all be cheated out of So
it is up to you to try and console
the people of Cleo and keep them
just as quiet as possible until
the great event is over and the
lady’s fate sealed
Friend of the Despairing Lady
The editor can always be relied
upon to do his utmost in such
cases but he is extremely reluc
tant to engage in any controver
sy over a woman’s age
In this issue will be found the
Socialist and Democrat county

ties have no paper in this section
we thought it would be the fair
thing to publish the tickets for
the information of our readers in
this section who are not all of
one political faith We published
these tickets two years ago with-
out cost to any one and we will
run them during this campaign
at the same price
