BUSINESS OPPOSITION MAYBE CAUSE
Saturday night the town was
awakened hj a‘ loud explosion and
Sunday It waa learned that a atlck of
dynamite or some other explosive had
been placed under a corner of the
negro restaurant run by E G King
in the Clough building
The elding on the boose was torn
loose a part of the floor ripped ur
and the window broken hut the
negroes did net hear the explosion
aud slept serenely on so they say
The falling of the window glass
awoke a psrt of them
Several people from nearby went to
the building and aroused the negroes
Two theories are advanced as to the
cause of the dynamiting one being
that of conflicting business Interests
between the two negro colonies one
set trying to run the other cut as
was ths case a year ago when Frank
Carr a negro set off the blasts by a
shack ocoupied by Carr and Crutch-
field another negro Carr waa after-
ward killed by Crutchfield over the
-trouble
The bringing In of a lot of negroes
to work on the concrete walks has
caused considerable stir and resent-
ment among our laboring men It la
talked that aomeof them took this
method of protecting themselves
against cheap negro labor The
laboring men here have been getting
12 00 for their J work while the
Imported negroes are working for
1160 a day
The building occupied by the
negroes Is owned by J M Clough of
this city Their lease on the building-
expired this week and the negroes
have been requested to hunt other
quarters Mr Clough regrets that
his property was Injured as he had
refused to allow the negroes to occupy
It after this week
Suuday Tom Morgan & negro stay-
ing with King at this restaurant
dropped dead from heart failure
Morgan waa lu the building when the
explosion occurred He had been
brought up from Weleelka the week
before on a charge of bootlegging but
had been acquitted Ou account of
heart trouble Morgan was unable to
return to Weleetka and was staying
at Bing’s doctoring up
