A LEGEND OF THE PLATTE
talker from Nebraska talked
the
tallest talk in years
The farmers heard their corns talk
and the corn-stalks held their ears
On the back platform of the resting
train the boy he stood on deck
Where each hey-rube stood ojon mouth
and stretched his rubbj'r neck!
The orator ho faltered “Have no fear"
said Richard Bland

to send some gargling oil
And some boxing gloves for I mutt

Tell them on election day with both
feet I'll be there
While tho farmers paint the town their
whiskers floating in the air
Tell McKinley and Mark Hanna and
each golden Democrat
That he will nut do a thing to them —
Bill Bryan of thu Platte
Then the train choo chooed to go ahead
and the farmers chewed to-bac-her
And thoy all discussed the parity and

An American Woman OIvm
noting rictoro of It
An American woman who has lived
for a year In Johannesburg recently re-
turnel to New York city and surprised
her friends by the stories she told of
life In the South African town So-
ciety there according to her accounts
was more formal than one would find
In New York Paris or London and
the dinners and other entertainments
were conducted with the greatest cere-
mony The American’s explanation of
this was that Johannesburg sooiety was
made up of such unusual elements that
its members believed safety was to bt
found only In the greatest dignity and
formality Even to let down the bars
tor a moment might bring disastrous
results so Johannesburg took Its Booial
pleasures with every restraint of the
most formal society The American
woman said that all Inquiries and em-
barrassing questions were ignored and
the Inhabitants realizing that they
were In s far -off country and dependent
on one another for society of any kind
made the best of the situation The
eost of living there was very high but
there was a great deal of money to be
spent and the lavlshness of the enter-
taining ‘was said to bs quite on a par
with Its severe punctlllloueness The
beet residences of the town are In the
suburbs which are laid out with the
streets running at right angles after
the fashion of American cities Few of
them boast of sidewalks and the dust
storms in ths town are the least toler-
able features of Its life to strangers
Clothing which Is Invariably Imported
from England Is the only thing that It
reasonable and It sells at prlcei little
tn advance of those In England Rents
ss well as the wages of servants are
from four to five times what they are
In England The native beef Is poor as
the cattle are driven up from the Orange
Free State to be slaughtered and very
expensive English servants are there
in plenty as the natives are not gen
erslly competent but the Imported do-
mestics are said to be vory much af-
fected by the life of the town Vege-
tables are rare and poor and a fortune
Is sold to await the man who under-
takes gardening la Johannesburg—
