very profitable last year and aa a 're-
sult a large acreage of both is evident
this season Practically every farmer
in Jefferson County raised sufficient
feed stuff last year to carry him
through the winter and a change from
the old style of cotton farming has
made a noticeable Increase Ip the de-

The work of representatives from
Ryan Rlngling Waurika and other
points In Jeffrson County in agitat-
ing the necessity of a farm demonstra
tor has resulted In sufficient funds
being raised by private subscription
' to defray the expenses until such time
as a lawful appropriation can be
made by the county commissioners
for that purpose
Attendance at the Oklahoma State
- Fair was conclusive proof that the
counties having farm demonstrators
were the counties that were forging
ahead and maklpg noticeable im
provements in an agricultural way
Realizing this Jefferson County cit
izens Interested in the movement de
elded to co-operate with the govern-
ment and a fund of $166 was raised
that amount being the pro rata share
Jefferson County must advance to
maintain a demonstrator until July 1
at which time it is thought the county
commissioners will take the matter
in hand and make an appropriation
of $500 a year and make the work
of a farm demonstrator for Jefferson
County a permanent feature
The government appropriates $700
a year for the purpose The plan is
operative in 61 out of the 76 counties
of the state and it is thought that
the work of the demonstrator can be
made so successful that there will
TRUTH AND TRADE
When a seller and a buyer have
made a trade based on truth both
have obtained a benefit and the com-
munity to which they belong has been
benefitted Insofar as their interests
affect the welfare of the community
Each has parted with that which the
Other needed and in turn has obtained
from his fellow-man what he himself
needed Honest exchanges therefore
enhance values
But trades based on untruth damage
all concerned They approach danger-
ously ner to theft
By advertising buyers and sellers
are brought together and truthful ad-
vertising promotes the welfare of the
commercial world it is in fact a
part of the weaith-produling fortes of
the world But untruthful advertising
is a fraud and the fosterer of fraud
It partakes of the nature of the crime
of getting money or goods 'ander
false pretenses - The medium of ad-
vertising whatsver Its nature which
lends its- columns to such advertising
accepts a bribe to become accessory
to the same crimp '
It is a far-reaching reform proposed
by the Associated Advertising Clubs
of the World in the motto "Truth"
Such 'a sentiment must act like a
health-laden current on the trade
winds Its influence will extend far
beyond the limits of advertising and
stimulate honesty In all the processes
and tmnsactions of commerce
The patron saints of the commercial-'
world 'Ought not -to bo
and Sapphire Lying spirits 'cannot
guide safely the merchantmen of the
world The argosies of trade must
sail by the pole-star of truth Other
wise they will be wrecked — Bishop

Claude Easterling Announces
for County Clerk
Lett® directed ' to taxpayers
and general public: ‘
v In placing my announcement
before the people for re-election
it devolves upon me the respon-
sibility of giving a proper ac-
count of my stewardship' while
in office and of making known
the business policy I advocate in
the future administration of this
branch of our local county gov-
ernment -
I am pleased to report to you
that under an act consolidating
the offices of Register of Deeds
and County clerk which took
effect a little over one year ago
I have been able to re-organize
these departments upon lines of
business efficiency with a sav-
ing to the county of over $4000
a term in running expenses
alone
That under this management
the two combined offices are not
only self supporting but pay into
the county treasury nearly $3-
000 a year over and above all
be no objection toward an appropria-' expenses including my own sal-
the board f county commis ary atl(J tbe saiary of twQ a8sig
ants
That out of all fees earned
since I have been in office there
was $1535 outstanding and 'un-
collected on March 1st 1916
loners of Jefferson County At pres-
ent the work of a farm demonstrator
is on trial without expenss to the tax-
payers J D Stinson of tbe Oklaho-
ma A ft M College has lotcatod in
Ryan and is expected to begin work
at once to stimulate an interest in
scientific farming by meeting with tbe
farmers holding farm' institutes and
encouraging the fanners to test oat
the improved methods of bettor farm-
ing and better seed selection He will
ala spend much time In the rural
schools laying put plans and assist
ing teachers In making the study of
agriculture a success in the schools
The annual countx fair and Jefferson
County Farmers’ Institute ip always
held at Ryan and this year Mr Stin-
son will shoulder the responsibility
of making the agricultural part of the
event more attractive by first organ-
ising district fairs for the purpose of
That there has never been a
warrant Issued by me in excess
of the “Estimate Made and Ap-
proved” for any of the county
or township funds'
That a full true complete
report has been given of each

for the benefit of the public '
" That I have had no other busi-
ness since first elected save that
you intrusted to me
That in knowing my services
belong to the people I have en
and - best efforts to the duties
of the office- v' 1"-
- Wlple I believe there should
always be such proyisionsTof law
ks'will permit 4 the removal for
cause of an incompetent nr dere-
lect public servant from his place
as quickly and easily as an incom-
petent or unfaithful employee
may be discharged from duty: in
private life ' -
It should be just as true of
publi business as it is of private
business that the continued ser-
vice of a competent person bene-
fits themployer increasingly as
experience and skill increased
To illustrate this a' friend of
mine said that ha had an utocle
back in Tennessee who served
as county clerk for 31 consecu-
tive years that an old resident
came into tbe office one day and
wanted to find a deed executed
by' -old John Swartz to iBob
Thompson soon after Uncler Bi
went into office well said Upcle
Bill we will find that in Boojt
A on page 16Q the 'book was
taken down from the top shelf
opened and sure enough on page
160' the instrument was (jiere
recorded ' ?
While I am not ambitious to
serveyou so long as that n6r is
it probable that anyone other
than Uncle Bill Could retain such
a wonderful memory I do think
I can make you a better cohnty
clerk in the future than I have
the past
We do no have to go back to
older states for’ illustrations of
tenure in office for county clerks
John Pittman has served Love
county adjoining us on theeast
as an efficient county clerk bon'
inuously since statehood Burton
larnes served Stevens county
adjoining us on the north as an
efficient county clerk from sjate-
lood up to the present ' term
when he declined to run 'again
on account of his health and in
many othercounties of Oklaho-
ma similar illustrations may ' be
had with reference to county
clerks ' ‘ ‘ I'
l am only asking youfor the
second term under ihe duftfeS of
the combined offices ' '- !' v'' r
It has been my misfortune ' to
collect and accumulate work and
assume - heavy responsibilities
rom other departments eyery
since I have been in office and I
will state for your -information
that in consolidating the offices
of Register of Deeds and County
Clerk there was ' none -of the
duties eliminated which have
been prescribed by law for each
of these offices - 1
' With the townships and ' other
business added my salary has
not been increased -but remains
the same ’ '
If you deem it to yohr best in
terest to honor me again with
the responsible duties of this of
fice my future policy shall be to
continue my devotion to 'your
service and my full purpose and
intention at all times will be to
save the county every dollar I
