FRIDAY
Many veteran apparently do not
dearly understand the regulations
governing payment of unemploy-
ment benefit under the Service-
men’s Readjustment Act of 1944
(G L Bill) To help clarify the mat-
ter the Veterans Administration of
fers these reminders
Veteran who taka temporary
jobs retain their rights to unem-
ployment allowance after they are
released from the job '
Veterans art not required to ap-
ply for job Immediately after
leaving service in order to' protect
their right to unemployment bene-
efits These benefit may be obtain-
ed any time within two years after
the official end of the war or with-
in two year after the veterans dis
charge whichever is later
A veteran may be eligible for un
employment compensation up to
$20 a week if he becomes unemploy
ed anytime within the time limit
The maximum period for which he
may draw jobless pay is 62 weeks
But benefits may not be drawn for
consecutive week A veteran with
at least ten month’s active service
is entitled to the maximum 52 week
benefits V
The veteran may apply for com
pensation as often a he becomes
unemployed provided he does not
voluntarily leave hi job without
good reason or is not discharged
for cause and still ha benefits a
vaiiable Should veterans bcome un-
employed after using til their vet-
erans’ unemployment credit many
of them will have built up enough
credit to become eligible for regul-
ar State unemployment compensat-
ion A veteran may also qualify for
self-employment allowances if he
engages in his own basinets for pro
fit and does not realise a net in
come of $100 a month In that e-
vent a veteran may draw the dif-
ference between his net proQt and
$100 for the month which the allow
ance is claimed Self-employment
allowance may be drawn for 10-2-5
months
A veteran who reenlisted in the
service during the war yean will
be eligible for unemployment ben-
efit when he leaves the eervic
but in no case can the payments be
made later than five years after the
end of the war Thus a veteran
who has enlisted for three years
will still have a f ull two-year period
to claim his unemployment bene-
fits after he is discharged
Eagle-Picher Case Before NLRB
la the U 8 District Court
at Miami
In a formal hearing held May 21
in the U S district court at Miami
in response to a petition for certi-
fication of bargaining agent filed
by the International Union of Mine
Mill and Smelter Worker (CIO)
with the national labor relations
board the Eagle-Picher Mining Co
resisted the contention of the union
relative to the composition of the
employee bargaining unit
Th Company contended that both
mine and mill employees ' should
comprise the bargaining unit which
has been the case pertaining t the
major mining companies in the Tri
State district that have had NLRB
elections to determine bargaining
agents for their employee
It was contended that the union
had changed it tactics relative to
the Eagle-Picher Company and
that the union aought only an elect-
ion among the mill or surface de-
partment employees tA company
spokesman pointed out that the com
pany would have consented to an
election without the necessity of a
hearing had the union agreed to the
inclusion of both underground and
surface employee
Contentions of both the union and
the eompany were heard by a NL
RB trial examiner who will now
certify the conteited action to the
national labor relation board in-
Washington Both parties will have
about two weeks in which to file
brief with the national board that
will probably grant oral argument
before handing down decision
