Taking Care of Yourself
There never was a time when peo
pie paid as -much attention to their
health and strength as they do now
Time was when fine stock and tine
horses were fed more carefully than
human beings
The result of properly balanced ra-
tions has worked wonders with stock
and recent experiments are proving
that the same thing is true of man-
kind It has been found that Quaker Oats
eaten often and regularly taking the
place of heavy greasy foods will work
wonders In the health and strength of
a family
School children fed frequently on
Quaker Oats thrive physically and are
always capable of the best work at
school For athletes laborers it is
the best food
For those who are not convenient
to the store the large size family pack-
age of Quaker Oats is the thing for
hot climates the hermetically sealed
tins are best 10

The father of Judge W H Wadhams
had a chicken-coop and a dog and r
stable hand It began to look to Mr
Wadhams as though some one had dis-
covered the combination So he kept
the coop and the stable hand but he
got a new dog Next day the bent
old negro who groomed the Wad-
hams’ horses came to him “You los’
you affection foh me boss?” he asked
"No Sciplo" said Mr Wadhams "I
like you as well as ever” “Then”
said Sciplo peevishly “w’yn’t you
tie Old Rover in de chicken-coop ’stid
of dat new dorg?”
An Entirely Selfish Theorist
“Do you believe in the theory of re-
incarnation?” asked the serious girl
“You mean to ask if I think we’ll
keep coming back to the earth again
end again?” rejoined the flippant
young man
“Yes”
“I have my doubts about It The
creditors may all come back but we
debtors are apt to go wandering along
to other planets If we can possibly ar-
range It”
A Lay Matter
“Would you like the floors in mo-

The Sprlngfleld man looked dubious
“Would you like the floors In mo-

“I don’t know so much about that”
e finally said “I ain’t got any preju-

CAREFUL DOCTOR
Prescribed Change of Food Instead of
Drugs
It takes considerable courage for a
doctor to deliberately prescribe only
food for a despairing patient instead
of resorting to the usual list of med-
icines There are some truly scientific phy-
sicians among the present generation
who recognize and treat conditions as
they are and should be treated regard-
less of the value to their pockets
Here’s ai nstancer
“Four years ago I was taken with
severe gastritis and nothing would
stay on my stomach so that I was on
the verge of starvation
“I heard of a doctor who has a sum-
mer cottage near me— a specialist from
N Y and as a last hope sent for him
“After he examined me carefully he
advised me to try a small quantity of
Grape-Nuts at first then as my stom-
ach became stronged to eat more
“I kept at it and gradually got so I
could eat and digest three teaspoon-
fuls Then I began to have color in my
face memory became clear where be-
fore everything seemod a blank My
limbs got stronger and I could walk
So I steadily recovered
“Now after a year on Grape-Nuts I
weigh 153 lbs My people were sur-
prised at the way I grew fleshy and
strong on this food”

Widow Under Agreement Is to R
ceive More Than $2000000
from the Estate
Chicago — Under the arrangement
for settling the $11000000 estate of
the late Charles T YerkeB street rail-
way magnate Mrs Mary Adelaide
Yerkes his widow will receive slight-
ly more than $2000000
This is considerably more than
friends of Mrs Yerkes had expected
she would receive some of the esti-
mates showing that practically all of
the estate would be consumed by the
liabilities and costly litigation that
has been pending in the federal courts
for three years
Just what Mrs Yerkes would re-
ceive was a matter of conjecture until
Attorney James J Barbour one of her
representatives discussed the propos-
Mrs Mary A Yerkes
ed agreement in detail Attorney Clar-
ence A Knight who Is associated
with Mr Barbour in the case went to
New York to arrange the final details
for closing up the estate
The arrangement was drawn up In
Chicago by Attorneys Knight and Bar-
bour j
“Of course the arrangement hasn’t
gone through yet” said Mr Barbour
“This agreement is but a tentative af-
fair although there is every indication
that it will go through all right Mr
Knight will conclude ' the arrangements-
for the settlement in New
York
“Of course all of the liabilities will
be paid in full While it is estimated
that Mrs Yerkes will receive slightly
more than $2000000 the exact
amount cannot now be told
It Is understood that Mrs Yerkes Is
dissatisfied with the settlement only
in the fact that it probably will be
necessary to sell the Fifth avenue
home As the site on which the house
is located is valued at $1500000 it has
been agreed that she could ill afford
to maintain the place even if it re-
mained in her possession

Embarrassing
' Not only the houses of the Mex-
icans but whatever you admire is
yours If you express a sentiment
of approbation of anything the own-
er at once says: "Senor it is yours”
but be simply Intends something flat-
tering and you are therefore not ex-
pected to accept anything that Is of-
fered to you An amusing story Is
told of Sir Spencer St John the Eng-
lish ambassador wliich Illustrates how
this national courtesy often provokes
embarrassment Sir Spencer who is
a gallant old bachelor was prom-
enading with some ladies lu the park
when he met a nurse girl with a
bright-eyed baby The ladies stopped
to admire the little one and Sir Spen-
cer asked whose child It was "Senor
it Is your own" replied the nurse with
a courtesy Sir Spencer has never In-
quired as to the parentage of pretty
children since
Had a Sure Thing
An individual well known on the
Berlin Bourse for his wit one morn-
ing wagered that he would ask the
same question of 50 different persons
and receive the same answer from
each The wit went to first one and
then another until he had reached the
number of 60 And this is how he
won the bet: He whispered half au-
dibly to each: "I say have you heard
that Meyer has failed?” "What
Meyer?” queried the whole 60 one
after another and it was decided that
the bet had been fairly won

Good Reason for Marrying

years after marriage they carried their

Getting in Deep

On the Instant they perceived that
they had tackled a real problem
