SOME EDITORIAL FACTS.
BY SPECIAL
SCRIBE.
Messrs. King and Rose, of Kay
county, are both railroad attor-,
neys, and democraiic nominees
for the constitutional convention.
Funny, isn't it?
With their usual consistency,
the democrats are accusing the
republicans of favoring the rail-
roads and corporations and them-
selves nominating such men as
Mr. Ledbetter,. of Ardmore, the
Santa Fe attorney for the Indian
territory, for delegate to the con-
stitutional convention.
The democratic declaration in
the platform of the 86th district,
that "We believe in the railroads
and will protect their interests
and redress their wrongs," is an
honest declaration of democratic
belief, and must be accepted as a
frank *n<! sincere expression of
popular sentiment in that party.
The only thing that is left for
the democrats to adopt in their
several platforms, that will in the
fewest number of words express
their true sentiments is the fol-
lowing: "We denounce the re-
publicans for monotonous pros-
perity and failure to demonstrate
in the last ten years, that they
are eminently qualified to suc-
cessfully handle a panic."
The democratic platform of the
86th constitutional convention
district, in whioh the city of
Purcell, I. T., is located, contains
a plank which says: "We be-
lieve in the railroads, and will
protect their rights and redress
their wrongs." Whatever else
may be said of the sentiments ex-
pressed in the above plank, it
cannot be said that they are not
democratic in every sense of the
term.
An Illinois editor retired from
journalism and his "good-bye" is
chronicled in the following lan-
guage: "The undersigned re-
tires from the paper with the con-
viction that all is vanity. From
the hour his paper was started tu
the present time, he has been so-
licited to lie on every given sub-
ject, and can't remember having
told a wholesome truth without
diminishing his subscription list
or making an enemy. Under
ny.
these circumstances of trial, and
having a thorough contempt for
himself, he retires in order to re-
cruit his moral constitution."
radical element in the east is in
the saddle. These men stand for
class legislation and the destruc-
tion of vebted property rights. In
Oklahoma that party stands for
railroads and corporations, and
are nominating railroad represen-
tatives for constitutional delegates
and adopting resolutions declar-
ing for railroad supremacy and
pledging the party to "redress
the wrongs" of railroads. Just
what wrongs have been done the
railroads are not quite apparent
to the casual observer, but there
is no doubt that wrongs of that
character exist or the democrats
would not voluntarily become the
redressing champions of those
corporations.

It is impossible to produce any
defensible excuse for the republi-
cans of Oklahoma not standing
squarely behind the party nom-
inee in the several constitutional
districts of the state. Nothing
can be accomplished by not do-
ing so, and every reason exists
why the solid file of the opposition
should be met by a solid rank of
resistance. What can the repub-
licans or prohibitionists expect to
gain by the election of the demo-
cratic candidates? The demo-
crats are openly hostile to every
principal that republica nism
stands for. The constitution
should be constructed by the
champions of good government
and not the reactionary and neg-
ative element of popular govern-
ment.
The democratic situation i s
truly refreshing. They are any-
thing to anybody and for any-
thing that will get votes. In New
York and Massachusetts they
have nominated men that stand
for everything that is revolution-
ary and reactionary. Hearst and
and Moran, who are identical in
character and purpose, prove be
yond a doubt that the dangerous

The railways of Oklahoma are
making the people pay the differ-
ence, from $2 to $3 per ton is now
given to the railroads as a gift
every time the citizen buys a ton
of coal. Kansas farmers get a 12
cent rate on wheat from Kansas
City, 300 miles north of this, to
Galveston, while the best the Ok-
lahoma farmer oan do is a 28 cent
rate. Farmers are compelled to
hand over to the railroads 16
cents per hundred above what is
charged the Kansas farmer.—El
