charged with the assassination of
Henry Spears a merchant ot Fenter
Grant county who was called to his
door about 9 o’clpck at night and shot
down and instantly killed An effort
has been made to keep the arrest of
the two negroes secret for fear of
vlQlence and It Is - known to few
people of Grant county
The two negroes lived in the com-
munity About two years Mr Spears
and Joe McElroy had an affray and
it was generally known that Spean
was about to bring suit against Fred
McElroy relative to the disposition
ot some mortgaged property -Great
excitement prevails through-
out the entire neighborhood and the
officers in charge ot the two negroes
are afraid ot mob violence should

Newport Ark— The courts were
deprived' ot a murder trial and tho
gallows probably of a victim when
the coroner's jury that Investigated
the deaths of Obe Laird and John
Campbell returned s a verdict that
Laird committed suicide after having
murdered Campbell Laird took his
own life at the home his employer
nnd the body ot Campbell was found
the next day in the woods near by
with a bullet hole through his tem-
ple Out of $390 that he was known
to have had In his pockets a search
of the dead body of Campbell re-
vealed only $10 It Is supposed that
Laird first shot Campbell and then
robbed his dead body and when
questioned about Campbell's where-
abouts committed suicide
